Family Math & Reading Night
The week of February 13th was Make-A-Wish Foundation Spirit Week. Each day of the week had a specific theme and students were asked to donate to the Make-A-Wish Foundation which provides "wishes" to children with severe illnesses. Students and staff raised $570.00.
OVES Students have been working hard to earn PAWS cards. They have reached the following benchmarks:
- 11,000 -- Principals will be singing a song on the morning announcements.
- 13,000 -- Students will sit where they choose during lunch on March 1st.
Middle School Spelling Bee
This year's OVMS spelling bee was an exciting affair, with 15 spellers (5 from each middle school grade) competing for the title. The spellers did an exceptional job, and the audience saw one of the longest, most competitive bees in OVSD history. This year's bee came down to a shootout between eighth grade student Myrra Small and seventh grader Kerry Hoover. Myrra was triumphant, winning with the word rheumatic.
Grade 6: Logan Henry, Myiah Hurley, Ben Levengood, Skyla Wertz, and Jeron Zimmerman
Grade 7: Caleigh Dickinson, Madeleine Farah, Emily Fick, and Brandy Koch
Grade 8: Mason Kane, Bryn Murphy, Jackson Smith, and Zain Wegman

Oley Valley Middle School Presents "The Little Mermaid Jr."
In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel (Lily Glick) longs to leave her ocean home to live in a world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father King Triton (Ethan McLaine), to make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula (Evey Fetter). Joined with her friends Flounder (Jorja McLaine), Sebastian (Anthony Witt), and Scuttle (Autumn Wolf), Ariel will try to convince Prince Eric (Corbin Teeters) that she’s the girl with the enchanting voice and reveal her true feelings for the prince, all before her deal with Ursula expires.
On Friday, March 17th and Saturday, March 18th, the Oley Valley Middle School Drama Club will present the musical, “The Little Mermaid Jr.” at 7:00 p.m. (both evenings). All tickets for the show are $5.00 (OVSD faculty are free) and can be purchased at the door or online at www.showtix4u.com. There will be refreshments served and raffle prizes displayed during intermission. We hope to see you at one of our performances.

Student Recognized for Pottery Skills
A hand thrown pottery bowl by Zach Good took first place awards at the "Souper Bowl" held on January 30, 2017 at Crowne Plaza in Reading. The annual event is the major fundraiser for Opportunity House, a multi-service organization improving the quality of life for children, families and adults who face various obstacles to independent living. The event annually raises upwards of $50,000 for the organization.
Attendees pay $30 to sample soup prepared by local restaurants and get to select a bowl to take home from works submitted by students and professional artists alike.
The Oley Valley High School juniors work was selected from donations of hundreds of hand made bowls. In addition, senior Sean Knarr also donated bowls for the event. Zach and Sean are to be commended for their willingness to donate their art to benefit this worthwhile community organization.
