Information & Updates from Dr. Ormsby

PLC/Curriculum Hours

I will be handing out the PLC/Curriculum approvals this week.

Expeditionary Learning

On Wednesday, December 3rd and Thursday, December 4th, David Grant, from Expeditionary Learning will be in the building videotaping the 6th grade while they are completing their literacy centers. David plans on conducting some interviews and may do some videotaping in the 4th grade and the PD room. David is doing a story about how a small school is being creative in implementing the Modules with limited resources. He said his goal is to make our school look “as good as possible.” Depending on how the story unfolds he may or may not ask to interview one of you or pop into PD to video. (So in short…get there early and do your hair that day). He will definitely give me a little warning so I will try to email you and let you know. If I call and ask you to interview feel free to say no as I do not want to put anyone on the spot.

Great NEWS –School Improvement Grant Doubles!

As you know this school year we were designated a school in good standing once again. Due to the fact the status was not approved until September, NYSED gave us one more year of funding and invites to the Network Team Institute in Albany three times per year. Last week I received an email notifying me that NYSED doubled our funding for the school year. Super exciting news! Although the grant has very specific rules for the use of the money, there are many great ways we can spend the money, such as PD, PLC, curriculum work, Eagle U and much more.

Out of Town

I will be out of town from December 5th –December 12th. I will be attending the National Expeditionary Learning conference in Boston from Saturday – Tuesday, touring a New Tech School on Wednesday in Albany, then staying in Albany for the Network Team Institute (NTI). As much as I do not like leaving my family (or work) for this long, the conference COULD NOT BE more timely and valuable for us. Conference topics include student led conferences, celebrations of learning, grit and perseverance in math, family engagement…and so on. The conference includes a visit to an EL school too.

The conference itinerary can be found here: http://elschools.org/sites/default/files/EL%20National%20Conference%20Catalog%20Boston%202014%20(7).pdf

If you have a minute, check it out for yourself. Michelle, Erin and Karen will be attending as well, so be sure to let me know if there is a specific topic you are interested in and we will make sure someone attends the session. We will be sharing on twitter throughout the conference so if you “tweet”…you can check it out there. The conference will be using #ELNC14.

On Thursday and Friday I will be in Albany for NTI. Michelle, Erin, Karen and Lizzie will be in attendance as well. The focus of this NTI is DDI. How perfect is that? Wish you could go? I have one open spot for NTI. Travel would be Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 12 and returning Friday, Dec. 12 at 8 ish. Let me know ASAP if you are interested. If not this time please let me know if you are interested in any of the travel opportunities in the PD menu. I have a few people that are interested in the TLAC PD…but do not want to go alone.

In my absence, Mrs. Krause will be in next week Monday – Friday as my substitute. Stop in and say hi and let her know if you need anything. I have a small list of jobs she will be working on throughout the week so she may be contacting you for one thing or another.
