Trussville City Schools Selected for the ALSDE MTSS Cohort 1!
TCS is honored and grateful to be chosen as part of MTSS Cohort 1. We look forward to partnering with Dr. Shelly Bailey and the team from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) to provide feedback and support on our current processes such as RTI, PACE, “Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Responsible”, our strategic plan, and in other areas that will benefit our students.
We know that participating in MTSS will continue to assist TCS in streamlining these outstanding best practices and initiatives already in place in our district to help ensure that students are successful…that means EVERY student in EVERY grade level!
We are excited to do a deep dive into the major tenets of MTSS which include Data based decisions, team driven leadership, engaged stakeholders, evidenced based instructional strategies, safe and supportive learning environments. MTSS is a model approach that will help us continue to support our students and teachers at the highest levels!

September is Attendance Awareness Month!
Schools throughout the nation have started the new school year and educators throughout the country are continuing their focus on increasing school attendance. A recent study found that students who are chronically absent in any year between eighth and 12th grade, are more than seven times more likely to drop out, compared to a student with better overall attendance.
Alabama school systems are working to strengthen the important role of parents and local community outreach, in ensuring all students consistently make it to school every day.
September has officially been designated as School Attendance Awareness Month 2022. This year’s theme is “Stay Connected, Keep Learning!” Special emphasis is being placed on building more student engagement, public awareness, and long-term family support for school attendance efforts.
“Addressing student attendance is truly not a solo effort,” said Dr. Kay Atchison Warfield, Alabama State Department of Education Prevention and Support Services
Administrator. “Working together, each of us – teachers, local schools, parents, and supportive residents of our local communities – must ensure a greater focus is placed on school attendance. Every day that a student is not in school, is a day this child misses important opportunities to gain experience, achieve, and grow.”
Barriers in transportation, health issues, poor nutrition, and mental health concerns are leading factors that often impact student attendance. A recent national survey revealed chronic absenteeism has more than doubled from pre-pandemic levels, with an estimated eight million students missing too many school days.
Chronic absences in elementary schools can often lead to lower reading scores. By middle school, it can be a warning sign if a student is on track to fail or eventually drop out of high school.
For this entire month, local school systems statewide have focused their efforts on helping all Alabama students, families, and communities take more impactful action. The goal is to ensure that every student is at school each day and fully achieving academically.
Chronic absenteeism -18 days or more a year (excused and unexcused) truly places students at greater academic risk - https://vimeo.com/240840053
