Center Township Weekly Update
January 12, 2023
Greeting CT Families & Friends!
January is a time of resolutions and goal setting, even at an elementary school. The teachers and students of Center Township Elementary are committed to improving the reading and math skills of all students. One way we accomplish this is through a program called Spring Math. Using this program, students have the opportunity to test their knowledge daily and graph their personal growth. Nothing shines brighter than the smile of a student who sees their own growth daily. Take a minute this week to ask your student about their progress in Spring Math.
Blast Off!!
CT budding astronomers in third through fifth grade took a journey through the universe in an inflatable planetarium. They learned how to identify every planet in our solar system in dramatic "flights" towards each world. Students were shown the "star filled" night sky of the Northern Hemisphere. Greek mythological characters were introduced and students saw how these heroes of the past could be found in the constellations today.
Science In Action
Fourth grade has started what is considered one of the “coolest” science investigations of the year; owl pellet dissection. Owls swallow their prey whole, in addition to the meat that they digest for food, they swallow other materials such as bones, fur, or feathers. Owls are unable to digest these materials, so they are regurgitated in a compacted mass called an owl pellet. Dissecting a pellet isn't a yucky activity; pellets are dry and very unsmelly. The students below are breaking apart the pellets, digging through to find little bones, and using charts to determine what part of the rodent’s body each bone came from. Fourth graders are learning about predators and prey.
Litter Hawks
Carmen Skal, a senior at Butler Senior High School, along with a couple helpers visited 2nd grade classrooms as part of the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Young Ambassadors of Pennsylvania program. The new program seeks to build community stewards and civic leaders by inspiring, engaging, and empowering young Pennsylvanians to not only keep their communities clean and beautiful, but to also become ambassadors in their community for a shared vision of a clean and beautiful state. The second graders learned about what litter is, where it comes from and why they should care about it through Carmen’s presentation and game.
Basketball Magic
The world-famous Harlem Wizards visited Butler Saturday for a memorable evening of great fun and fundraising. The energy at the game was electric and the hoop artistry, ball-handling, tricks and teamwork were mesmerizing. The Harlem Wizard players even managed to make the teachers and staff look good on the court, which may have been their most amazing feat. The CT PTO, CT SOAR team, and the CT staff hosted an event that won’t soon be forgotten.
