poetry awards
Congratulations to our six published authors for having their poems chosen for the Polk County Poetry Contest. Adelina, Melissa, Isabella, Alina, Sherlyn, and Stella were recognized at an awards ceremony at Florida Southern College where they each received a copy of the poetry anthology. Alina’s poem, “Gestures of the Wind”, received second place for 8th graders and Stella received an honorable mention for her poem, “The Rolling Tide”.
gestures of the wind
A looming chill is cast,
the wind hugging the humans,
as muffled voices ring through the air.
It cuts through the branches,
swaying in a sync trance,
retracing its steps,
looking for something.
Or rather,
someone.
Its curiosity spreads,
taunting the children’s hair,
their laughs echoing through the tranquil silence.
The wind, at last, arrives,
whistling through the autumn sky,
dancing a silent waltz with leaves of orange and red.
Though, its time is coming once more,
as the leaves return to their vibrant green,
flowers blooming about,
the wind fulfilling its final dance.
As the leaves say goodbye,
it is not the end yet.
When the time is right,
they will meet once more,
as their paths cross again.
Afterall,
this goodbye was not for forever.

the rolling tide
The tide rolls in
with steady sloth hands
nearing the shore
and greeting the sand
as it collects the seashells
and crabs roaming about
the tide comes to the realization
that its time has run out.

Raising kids in a digital age isn't easy
Create tech-free zones. Keep family mealtimes, other family and social gatherings, and children's bedrooms screen free. Turn off televisions that you aren't watching, because background TV can get in the way of face-to-face time with kids. Recharge devices overnight—outside your child's bedroom to help him or her avoid the temptation to use them when they should be sleeping. These changes encourage more family time, healthier eating habits, and better sleep.
Happy Birthday to our May Birthdays!
