J-P Dice, WBRC Chief Meteorologist & Colon Cancer Survivor
James-Paul Dice joined FOX6 as chief meteorologist in August 2008. He is no stranger to Alabama's always interesting weather. James-Paul came to FOX6 from WHNT-TV in Huntsville where he worked 11 years. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in August, 2012. He shares his journey regularly at community events and why early detection is so important.
James-Paul is an innovator in broadcast meteorology. In 2004, he led the development of the first dual-polarization Doppler radar used in broadcast meteorology. In the near future, all National Weather Service radars will use this technology to provide more accurate warnings. James- Paul was also the first meteorologist in Alabama to earn the new Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society. He also carries the National Weather Association Seal of Approval. He was awarded best weathercaster in the state by the Alabama Associated Press in 2004, 2006, and 2010.
Before moving to Alabama in 1997, James-Paul was a meteorologist at WCJB-TV in Gainesville, Florida where he tracked everything from tornadoes to hurricanes. He actually started his broadcast career working in radio while still in high school. James-Paul grew up in a small Central Florida town called Frostproof - perfect hometown for a meteorologist.
James-Paul has a Master of Science degree in Geoscience from Mississippi State University and a Bachelor's degree in telecommunication news from the University of Florida. He has also completed additional graduate-level meteorology coursework at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. For the past three years, he has taught meteorology and environmental science courses at Calhoun Community College in Huntsville. Currently, he teaches sciences courses at Jeff State Community College.
He is a commercial and instrument rated pilot. When he's not at the TV station - you can find him flying the skies of Alabama.
