The Cannon Connection

2021-2022 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families

December 5-11, 2021

Good morning Cannon families,

What an amazing week filled with so much holiday cheer! Thank you Gina Appleby, Rose Matheus, Steffany Batik, Angela and Jeff Hall, Liz Chalmers, Michael and Holly Landauer, PTA volunteers and Ms. Stewart and our 3rd-5th grade choir for organizing and running a festive and fun PTA Breakfast with Santa! It was an amazing morning filled with song, laughter, and cheer - Thank you to all that attended!

Please help me give a huge SHOUT OUT to our Cannon Dad's Club! Not only did they engineer a masterpiece of a Christmas float, but they also took Friday to showcase the engineering design process they used to imagine, plan, and improve their design with our scholars. From simple machines, mechanical and light energy to creativity and recycling materials, our scholars heard from some talented dads! One of our core STEM pillars is Community! This year, we had more dads helping to build the float than any previous year; THANK YOU FOR PUTTING IN THE COUNTLESS HOURS to support our Cannon Community! Our Cannon Dads spent the last eight weeks building our float - Thank you for bringing us so many priceless memories and some much needed holiday cheer! We are so grateful to have such dedicated families supporting our mission to enhance the engineering thinking process at Cannon! Thank you for supporting our PURPOSE, INNOVATION, and COMMUNITY!

Can you believe we have 10 days until our winter break? The next two weeks are going to go by very quickly. We are excited to share that our grade level PTA coordinators and teachers have been hard at work planning our holiday parties. Our cubs will have a great time! Be on the lookout for communication from your grade level PTA coordinators and teachers for details. Please understand that we will not be having volunteers and visitors at holiday parties. Also, mark your calendar for early dismissal on Friday, December 17th at 11:45.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership!

Proud to be your principal,

Tina Garrett

Lunch Visitors ~

Per the recent GCISD guidelines (still listed below) for visitors and volunteers, we may allow lunch visitors beginning Sept. 7th. We have made accommodations at Cannon to have lunch visitors eat with their Cub spread out in the cafe on the booth side, which allows guests to socially distance and can accommodate up to 6 families per grade level lunch. Families will only be permitted to eat with their Cub (Sorry, no friends). Thank you for cleaning up and throwing away trash after your family lunch!

Lunch guests will still sign-in through our secure vestibule, complete the COVID screening, and meet their Cannon Cub at the entrance to the cafeteria before proceeding to the booth table area for lunch. We will post the next month of lunches to sign-up for around the beginning of each month here in The Cannon Connection and it will remain linked in the lunch section at the bottom for the remainder of the month. We ask that you please be courteous to the rest of the community and limit lunch visits with your child to no more than one per month so that all families have the opportunity to visit. We appreciate your cooperation. Each family needs only 1 slot reserved. For example, Mom, Dad, and sister may all come eat lunch with their Cub. Only Mom needs to be registered as 1 visitor to reserve 1 booth together. When it asks for quantity of visitors, please select just 1. You may bring whomever you want on the day you check-in at the school office to sit at your family booth. Please understand we are unable to accept walk in lunch visitors.

All lunch visitors must sign up - December's Lunch Sign Up

Visitor/Volunteer Guidelines

Remote Conferencing

Beginning on Monday, August 23, remote conferencing will be available for students who are unable to attend school in-person because they are in quarantine as the result of being a close contact or test-positive for COVID-19.

Approved by the Texas Education Agency, remote conferencing is a mechanism by which online instruction can be provided for those who are temporarily away from campus for reasons related to COVID-19. It is important to remember this is not GCISD Online, a temporary remote learning option for elementary students that families were made aware of last week.

Please click here for frequently asked questions regarding remote conferencing. More detailed information, including a complete list of FAQs, is available from the TEA by clicking here.

Emergency Management and School Security

The GCISD Director of Emergency Management and School Security, Allen Smith, has asked that we provide you with information regarding Standard Response Protocols.

GCISD partners with the I Love U Guys Foundation and uses the Standard Response Protocols (SRP) to respond to any situation or emergency that takes place at school or in the district.

  • Each campus will conduct drills throughout the school year. These drills are based on the Standard Response Protocols of Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, and Hold. GCISD developed one additional protocol known as Clear.

  • Completion of the drills is mandatory for each campus during the first two weeks of school, so that students and staff are prepared. Drills help us learn and know how to respond in the case of a real emergency at school. Our drills also help us to check certain equipment and responses. Our emergency management leaders on each campus will work with students and staff to complete our drills and document the results.

I have included the SRP Posters that are displayed in your student’s classrooms so that you can review with your student at home and discuss with them when they take part in the drills during the first two weeks. More information about Safety and Security in GCISD can be found at www.gcisd.net/our_district/safety_and_security. If you have any questions, Allen is very receptive to speaking with parents about our safety practices and may be reached at allen.smith@gcisd.net.

Cafe Menu Update!

They also plan to offer a hummus box daily in addition to the baked potato that is available. All menu items are subject to change due to availability. Students may always select a vegetable plate that consists of two vegetables, one fruit, one grain, and milk.

Cafeteria Volunteers
