Deerfield Elementary
November 2019
Greetings from the Office!
Nice November
Thanksgiving is November 28th and World Kindness Day is November 13th, but at DES, we think we can do even better and have a whole month of gratitude and kindness! During “Nice November” we will be having dress-up days, activities and challenges to promote kindness and end social exclusion.
Kindness Rocks!
Students have been working hard to be noticed following our five character traits of being honest, helpful, responsible, respectful and to have a positive attitude. Each week students are randomly chosen to receive a rock. These rocks can be painted and either put around the Deerfield community for someone else to pick up or we add them to our Kindness garden outside the front of school. This is a great way for our students to pass along the message that Kindness Rocks!
Last Thursday the Deerfield staff attended an all day inservice in Lake Mills. The keynote speaker was Dr. Michele Borba, a renowned author on parenting. Here is a link to a website that she speaks about raising an empathetic child. The DES staff is currently involved in a book study on fostering empathy in students.
Parent-teacher conferences
Please sign up using the directions that were sent home in Tuesday Newsday folders. Sign up is done through Skyward and will close on Friday, November 8th. Conferences are on Thursday, November 14th and Tuesday, November 19th from 3:30-7:30pm. Please contact the office or your child's teacher if you have questions on this process. We want you to walk away from conferences knowing "The Big 3".
1. What should my child know and be able to do by the end of the school year? (brochure from RSG conferences)
2. How is my child doing/progressing?
3. What can I do at home to support learning?
Winter Weather
It seems that the winter weather has arrived. Please label all of your child's belongings with their name or initials on winter coats, hats, gloves, boots, snowpants etc.. Our lost and found is often overflowing. Thanks in advance for doing this. Please dress your child accordingly as we will go outside for recess, unless the temperatures warrant indoor recess. Your child needs snowpants and boots to be off the blacktop areas.
Please don't hesitate to contact the office or myself with questions. We are here to help!
Thanks,
Melinda Kamrath
DES Principal

What's happening in EC?
We are working on:
- Using motor skills in play (running, climbing, jumping)
- Using fingers and hands to draw, build block structures, play with small toys
- Playing near and with peers; begin to pretend play
- Use sounds and gestures to communicate; combine consonant and vowel sounds to make words
- Undress and dress themselves, use the toilet
- Learn simple concepts (hot/cold; up/down; in/out; big/little)
- Match a variety of actions to appropriate objects in play (hugging stuffed toys, turning pages of books, putting a hat on head, stacking blocks)
What's happening in 4K?
In Ms. Rahaman's class we have been working very hard on letter recognition and the sounds that letters make. As seen in some of the photos, we are doing daily tasks that surround our letter of the week.
Center time has been a big hit in our classroom. Many of the pictures depict students playing together, or reading together, or being proud of their work. This is enhancing our social-emotional learning because they are getting the chance to interact with one another and use the skills we have learned.

2019-20 PTO NEWS
The PTO has been busy getting ready for the Craft Fair on 11/9, which is our largest fundraiser. We could still use some volunteers the day before and the day of to help make the event successful. If you are interested in helping out during the craft fair please see the sign-up link on our Facebook page. The craft fair runs from 9am-3pm so if you can't volunteer please consider shopping and supporting the vendors! The holidays are quickly approaching and it's a great place to find gifts! We are also still looking for raffle prize donations. If you have something you would like to donate, please contact Sarah Hart or Michelle Schwab.
During our last meeting we approved purchasing new lights for the DES stage which will be much cooler than the current lights for the students and will prevent shadows on the performers. The PTO also recently sponsored the Stoughton Norwegian dancer enrichment program at the end of October.
Upcoming PTO events:
Craft Fair - 11/9
Culvers Share Night - 11/12
Pizza for Parent/Teacher conferences - 11/14 and 11/19
Deerfield Clothing Fundraiser - Opens around 11/14
Our next meeting is Tuesday November 5th. We hope to see you there!
President-Sarah Hart
Treasurer-Rebecca Schultz
Secretary-Kimberly McAloon
The 2019-2020 meeting dates are as follows:
· Tuesday November 5
· Monday December 9
· Thursday January 9
· Wednesday February 12
· Monday March 9
· Tuesday April 7
· Monday May 11
Our goal is to have at least 2 parents for every grade level attend each meeting so we have a good representation across the school. Please consider joining us! We need parent participation to make this program successful. The agendas and meeting minutes are always posted on the elementary school home page for reference as well as the PTO Facebook page. We will also post periodic updates of PTO happenings and each grade level also has their own Facebook page for grade-specific discussions.
