Most people use the preinstalled OpenSSH on Linux, though, puTTY on windows is used more for debugging, connecting to serial ports, and to raw sockets.

In this article, you create your keys and then use them to connect to your server. You can use an SSH client to get a bash prompt on the Linux server or use a Secure FTP (SFTP) client to move files to and from the server.

What is SSH Key Pair?

Big picture
The SSH key pair is used to verify the identity of a user or process that wants to obtain a remote system using the SSH protocol.

SSH provides public-key authentication and password authentication, and encrypted data communications between the two systems connected over an open network. Secure shell protocol connections are encrypted using symmetric encryption, asymmetric encryption, and hashing.
