Laura Temali Receives Literacy MN Award: Excellence in Volunteer Engagement
As a teacher, Laura collaborates with volunteers very effectively to help meet the needs of students in her classes, while providing meaningful activities for her volunteers. Laura dedicates Wednesday class times for a group of volunteers to come to work with conversation groups and writing practice. During the pandemic, while all classes were online, Laura recruited some of her friends and family members she knew to help with her class. The students had been asking for more practice with speaking, and she made it happen. All through the process, she kept the volunteer coordinator in the loop. She has continued to have these groups since returning to in-person classes.
A little bit about Laura:
After finishing college, Laura decided to get her elementary teaching license. She taught 3rd grade at Museum Magnet Elementary School in Saint Paul in the Rondo Education Building. After starting a family, she decided to get her ESL license to have more part-time job options. During that time, she fell into teaching adult ELL in the Family Literacy Program which was a joint program between Hubbs Center and Early Childhood Family Education. She loved working with adults so much that she got her ABE license. When a full-time position opened up at Hubbs Center, she was lucky to get the job. She has been teaching adults since 2004, but full time since 2014. Laura has taught advanced ELL classes, occupational classes, writing classes and a little GED. Laura currently teaches ELL C and Communication B classes at the Hubbs Center in person. She loves how her job combines teaching and social work (She has many social workers in her family!) The students are so motivated to reach their goals, she feels honored to help them.
Indoor Play Areas
Teacher, Laura Temali, was talking with her students in class about places they can take their kids in St. Paul where they can play indoors, and shared this list so others can find places to go to get out during the winter. Thanks for sharing the great resource!
