Global School Play Day: Feb. 6th
From my friend, Liz's, blog:
"When I asked the staff about participating again it was unanimous. Here are some of the reasons they wanted to do this:"
- Simply put - you can learn through play!
- It was a great way to encourage interactions between students, to be able to relax while learning
- Hands on games are important to developing motor skills
- I think it's a great way for students to problem solve and resolve conflicts
- It's important to educate parents and the community about the benefits of play
- Playing is learning and exploring

Hold in Place Drill Feedback
Following a recent hold in place situation, we asked several staff members to reflect on what they did with their students during that time. There were a few questions posed with answers that would benefit the entire staff.
- Should a hold in place include only a specific portion of the building
- should you be on plan and your area be affected, traveling through that area should be done with caution. Seek guidance from the crisis team members present to determine if your movement through the space will be acceptable at that time.
- should you have a student in your classroom with an emergency need (restroom, nurse, etc.), please contact the office who will then be able to communicate with the crisis team involved in the situation. They will then be able to determine the best way to support that students needs while maintaining the greatest hold in place status
- should your students be outside of the classroom and the hold in place happening in your hall, please use your best problem solving skills to determine the most appropriate place to hang out in - remember we have the maker space, JCPRD space, cafeteria, etc. Consider which grade level is on plan at that time and consider asking permission to borrow their classroom

Fire Drill Feedback
We wanted to take a moment to share some of the feedback that staff members shared following or fire drill last week.
- The most common item people would have changed - the weather - AMEN!!!
- The most common request - more fire drill practice - we promise that eventually we'll find a balance of what drills to do when. We are only required to do 4 a year and we have to do so many other types of drills that it might be overwhelming. We know there are more hold in place style drills, but the details are different and that's what the state wants.
- The best suggestion - when teachers are taking attendance (especially once everyone is up on the hill), it is very challenging for teachers to know for sure that when they hear a child say "here" that it's actually THEIR student. The suggestion was that we should teach our students to say their teacher's name followed by the student's name. So if I'm in Koca's class I would say "Koca - Julie." We really like this idea, so please teach this to your students as soon as possible.
