Chapter Summary
Chapter 1
2) Mr. Jones is drunk.
3) All the animals gathered in the farm to have a meeting about a rebellion that is coming soon.
4) All of the animals learn the song Beasts of England. The animals sing this song as they are raising the flag of Sunday's.
Chapter 2
2) The rebellion comes fast and the animals run all of the humans off of the farm.
3) The pigs are the only animals on the farm that can read and write. Snowball writes on the top of the gate "Animal Farm" replacing the old farm name.
4) The 7 commandments also gets painted on the wall of the barn.
7 commandments:
1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
3. No animal shall wear clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
6. No animal shall kill any other animal.
7. All animals are equal.
Chapter 3
2) All of the animals have a weekly meeting to discuss their progress on the farm.
3) Some of the animals cant remember the 7 commandments and they can't go and read them either so Snowball sums all of the Commandments into "Four legs good, two legs bad."
4) All of the food that the animals harvest on the farm are supposed to be shared equally between all of the animals but most of the food is just going to the pigs.
Chapter 4
2) Other farms are trying to take over Animal Farm. Mr. Pilkington of Foxwood and Mr. Frederick of Pinchfield farm are trying to take over.
3) The animals successfully fight them off and this is known as the Battle of Cowshed.
4) All of the animals believe that Snowball helped defeat in the battle.
Chapter 5
2) Napoleon believes that they don't need a windmill and the animals should be worried about the food production but Snowball disagrees.
3) Napoleon gets nine dogs that chase Snowball off of the farm.
4) Once Snowball is gone Napoleon says that the windmill will be built after all.
5) Squealer, another pig on the farm, says that it was Napoleon's idea after all to build the wind mill and Snowball just took the idea from Napoleon.
Chapter 6
2) Napoleon told all the animals that they are going to start trading with other farms.
3) The pigs moved into the farm house and have started sleeping in beds.
4) One of the pigs changed the fourth commandment. The commandment was originally "No animal shall sleep in a bad." It is a now "No animal shall sleep in a bad with sheets."
5) Napoleon blames Snowball for messing with the commandments and wants to now kill Snowball.
Chapter 7
2) Some of the animals that are already on the farm are helping Snowball.
3) When Napoleon found that out he ordered a meeting with all of the animals. Napoleon made all of the animals confess. If they did confess then they were ripped to pieces by Napoleons dogs.
4) The animals that were left started singing Beasts of England but Napoleon told all the animals that they should no longer sing that song.
Chapter 8
2) Napoleon bargains to sell Mr. Pilkington to sell a pile of timber. The other animals don't trust Pilkington and they think they should sell the timber to Fredrick.
3) Fredrick lies to Napoleon and gives him fake banknotes. Napoleon got forged banknotes and Fredrick got the timber.
4) The pigs find alcohol and drink for there victory.
5) The animals think that Napoleon is dying but he is just really hung over for drinking so much alcohol.
6) The 5th commandment was "No animal shall drink alcohol" but it is now "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess."
Chapter 9
2) Boxer becomes very ill and was supposed to be taking by a truck to the town's hospital.
3) The truck that shows up belongs to a horse slaughter.
4) The animals are very upset but Squealer tells them that the truck was purchased by a veterinarian but just hasn't been painted yet.
Chapter 10
2) All of the commandments were erased and all that is on the barn wall now is "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
3) The farm was currently "Animal Farm" but has now been changed back to "Manor Farm."
4) The pigs are reading newspapers, carrying whips, wearing clothes and other many things that humans do.
5) Some of the animals had a meeting and they looked through the window of the farmhouse and they could no longer tell the different between the pigs and the humans.
Characters
Snowball
2) Napoleon's dogs ran him off of the farm.
3) Snowball went and lived at a better farm and was well fed.
4) Napoleon blamed Snowball for knocking over the windmill.
5) Snowball is a figure of Leon Trotsky because just like Snowball, Trotsky was exiled from Russia by his former partner Stalin.
Napoleon
2) Napoleon made all of the final decisions for example, he changed the farms name back to Manor Farm even though it was animal farm.
3) Napoleon killed many of the animals for being on Snowballs side.
4) His name is from the powerful Emperor of the French.
5) Napoleon expresses the idea that power comes from corruption.
Old Major
2) He teaches the animals the song Beasts of England.
3) A few nights later he dies.
4) The Old Major represents Karl Marx, the German political philosopher. Marx called the workers of the world to unite against the ruling classes.
Mollie
2) She always had ribbons in her mane and ate sugar cubes.
3) Mollie leaves the farm to go work for humans.
4) She represents those whose lust for material things blinds them to the importance of freedom.
Benjamin
2) He believes no matter if anyone changes anything the farm will always be as equally as bad as it already is.
3) Benjamin is the one that read the side of the truck that took Boxer away. It was to late before he realized that it said horse slaughter.
4) He represents the cynical intellectual who refuses to do anything to make the situation better and doesn't want anything to do with politics.
Boxer
2) One of his hoofs got hurt during the Battle of the Cowshed.
3) He is always repeating "I must work harder" and "Napoleon is always right."
4) Boxer represents the common working class who does not want to except there existence because the y believe hard work gets them ahead and there leaders will protect them.
5) Even though he worked hard his leader still didn't protect him because Napoleon sent him to a horse slaughter.
Clover
2) She questions the change to the 4th commandment but accepts it.
3) Once she found out that the truck that took Boxer away said Horse slaughter she ran after it but was not able to catch up to it.
4) Also like Boxer, she also represents the working class.
Moses
2) The pigs like him because he gives them happy thoughts and it takes there mind off of their troubles.
3) Moses represents organized religion.
Squealer
2) He is the one that explained why the commandments got changed, the cows produce, the pigs drink, and even why Boxer's truck he went away in said horse slaughter.
3) He makes all of the animals believe.
Muriel
2) She can read better than most of the other animals on the farm and she read the 7 commandments to the animals.
3) She is named after the actual animal that Orwell, the author of the book, kept on his farm.
Mr. Jones
2) He is often drunk and forgets to feed the animals so the animals start to think about Revolution.
3) The animals chase all of the humans off the farm.
4) He represents Nicholas II, the last tsar of Russia, before the communists took over the government.
Mr. Frederick
2) He runs the farm Pinchfield.
3) Frederick represents Adolf Hitler. Like Hitler, Frederick is treacherous, he made an agreement with Napoleon and attacked his enemy's land.
Mr. Pilkington
2) He runs the farm called Foxwood.
3) He represents England.
Mr. Whymper
2) He represents a country that does things and does't even think about if it is right or not.
Sheep
2) They said the slogan for hours at a time " Four legs good, two legs bad."
3) In society they are the ones who are told to say things and before they realize what they are saying that have already said it.
Dogs
2) These dogs run Snowball off the farm.
Themes
Human Rights
2) If all of the animals were equal then it wouldn't even be a question if the rabbits and rats were included or not.
3) It shouldn't matter that the rats and rabbits are small or not.
4) The animals are compared to as humans and humans do that all the time about how some people say that if somebody looks a certain way then they can't be friends with them.
Truth and Falsehood
2) When the windmill first got knocked over Napoleon automatically assumed it was Snowball but that wasn't necessarily true because the storm could over knocked it over.
3) Also when the commandments got changed the pigs that changed them lied because they got all the other animals fooled that he commandments were always like that but they never really were they had just changed it.
Language
2) Also the animals use there language by there songs. The animals were always singing Beasts of England or chanting "Four legs good, two legs bad."
3) Some of the sheep sometimes don't even realize what they are saying. They are singing and chanting along but never realize it sometimes.
