COVID-19 Update

Earlier this evening, families received a district-wide email from the Superintendent, Dr. Jim Elsasser updating families on CUSD's ongoing monitoring and response to Coronavirus (COVID-19). Dr. Elsasser's letter explained how our district coordinates with public health agencies and the Los Angeles County Office of Education in situations such as this. He also outlined our district's decision to cancel large, school-based events until April 3 and to evaluate, in an ongoing way, upcoming school-sponsored events, trips and activities based on the most up-to-date information. His letter referenced several sources of potentially helpful information including a new District webpage: Among those resources you'll find an article on how to talk with your child about COVID-19. Here's an easy link

In our last Leaf, I mentioned steps to combat the spread of illness. At Sycamore, staff members are coaching students regarding hand washing and ways to cover a cough. Posters have been added around campus to remind students about these healthy habits, as well. Students are clearing their desks before they leave school so that custodial staff can clean and disinfect desks each day. In addition, custodians are cleaning hard surfaces such as door knobs, hand rails, bathroom doors, etc. throughout the day.

We are also taking steps to keep healthy students healthy and ensure students are at home if they are not well. Per policy and the Department of Public Health, we will send students and staff home with a fever of 100 degrees. Anyone with a fever is required to stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone (without the use of medication). For the well-being of your child, other children and staff, we need everyone's assistance in making sure these policies are followed. We have divided our office to create separate zones for supporting students with health needs. Students with fevers will remain in the health office until a parent can pick up. Students with an injury will be supported in the front portion of the office so that they are away from students who may be ill. The principal's office will be used for students who are not feeling well and need care or monitoring. Teachers will address minor injuries in the classroom when soapy water and a band-aid is adequate.

We recognize there is a good deal of uncertainty right now. Daily updates may present us with changes and additional questions. Please know that District staff and I will continue to share updates and information as we have it. We trust you will do the same as we move through this together. Please feel free to communicate directly with me as you have questions or concerns. I can be reached via email at or by phone at 909-398-0324.

Thank you,

Amy Stanger

Sycamore's 45th Annual International and Multicultural Day

One of our most favored traditions is just around the corner. Sycamore's 45th Annual International and Multicultural Day t-shirts are available now. They will be sold outside the school office before and after school on Thursday and Friday as well as Tuesday of next week (maybe longer as supplies last). These sell for $15 each. International Day will take place on Wednesday, April 1. Starting with our opening all-school assembly at 8:30 and continuing to lunch, students will enjoy a cultural feast! Throughout the morning, students will travel to three "destinations," presentations self-selected from a list including Ethiopia, Ireland, Philippines, India, Taiwan, Palestine, Korea, Italy and more.

There are many ways to support this day. Use this link to volunteer or provide supplies for the event. may also use the link to contact our I-Day coordinator, Laila Ghafarshad.
