Math: Area and Perimeter
All math groups have moved on to the study of area and perimeter. We will be addressing the following academic standards as we move through this exciting component of measurement.
- "Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by modeling with unit squares, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Identify and draw rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
- Multiply side lengths to find areas of rectangles with whole-number side lengths to solve real-world problems and other mathematical problems, and represent whole-number products as rectangular areas in mathematical reasoning.
- Find perimeters of polygons given the side lengths or by finding an unknown side length."
Ag Day T-Shirt Designing Contest
I've not gotten many design entries or shirt sizes forms back for the Ag Day T-shirt design contest. These are due on the morning of Monday, February 5th. Late entries will not be accepted.
Even if your child chooses not to participate,
he or she must submit the paperwork
and fill out the STUDENT T-SHIRT SIZE
in order to receive the shirt.
Snow Make Up Days
Due to the two weather related school closings so far this year, all Union County schools will now be in session on both February 19 and May 7, 2018.
Valentine's Day
The students' Valentine's Day boxes have been beautifully created and are proudly on display. Students may feel free to bring those Valentines in as they finish addressing them.
Cookie Dough Fundraiser
Parents, please keep helping your child sell that cookie dough/popcorn. Remember, funds from these purchases go toward rebuilding our playground, which is in desperate need of replacement.
Jump Rope for Heart
Students are starting to earn those coveted "monsters" by seeking donations for Jump Rope for Heart. Remember, you can set up a personal fundraising page for your child please click here. Students earn a prize for obtaining at least one online donation. Similarly, you can "unlock" the monsters by searching for "Jump/Hoops" in your app store.
Next Week's Share Topic
What is your favorite food? Do you know the ingredients that it takes to make it? Is there a special time that you eat this food with your family? Is it a family recipe?
Midterms
In today's folder you will find your child's midterm progress report. Please understand that our tasks here are getting increasingly more difficult. As a result, you might see a decline in your child's grades. We've spoken extensively about a growth mindset in our classroom, and students have been reminded that grades sometimes serve as a reminder for areas that we will aim to improve. They are constantly reminded, "As good as we are, we can always get better."
Due to the incredible expectations for what students are expected to do on these upcoming tests, the rigor of what we're doing in the classroom absolutely must match. Oftentimes, I'm asked, "How can I help my child with reading and vocabulary?" The answer is plain and simple: READ, READ, READ! If your child is not spending at least 20 minutes per night reading, then he or she is not getting what (s)he needs to be successful with language arts. I thank you--in advance--for seeing that your child carves out time in the evening for reading and/or math facts practice.
Donation Request
With February upon us, we are entering the high-stakes testing season for these hard-working students who'll be taking the IREAD and ISTEP tests. Above all, I want to make absolutely certain that these fine young people know that they mean "so much more to me than a test score." Further, I wish to reduce the amount of pressure or stress that they might feel by creating a fun testing environment. With that in mind, I am seeking donations for some testing treats to make the assessments a bit more bearable. We will need time to prepare these items, so if you care to donate, please send your items in by Monday, February 19th. Please use the online form below to let me know of your preferences. Thank you so much for helping to make learning such an inviting activity for our students.
