Newsletter 4th February 2022
Rosehill College
From the Principal,
Tēnā koutou katoa,
Welcome to the 2022 school year. It was a great pleasure today to welcome our new students and I thank our Student Advisers and staff for helping them on their first day. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions on large gatherings we held our pōwhiri with a group of Year 9 students representing all new students. This was recorded and shown to all new students in their classes. We also welcomed those staff who have joined us this year.
We look forward to seeing all students in school on Tuesday 8 February at 8:40am. Please note the earlier start time for a Tuesday. Buses will operate as for a Monday and the Tuesday late starts will begin from 15 February.
Senior re-enrolment and course confirmation occurred on Wednesday and Thursday this week, and students will receive their timetables on Tuesday. However, there may still be changes that need to be made to timetables over the next week or two as our numbers settle.
The front of the school is an extremely busy area at the beginning and end of the school day and, to keep students safe, we ask that parents and caregivers do not drive into the grounds to drop off or pick up students during these times. Please arrange to meet your son or daughter in a nearby street.
Year 10 camp has been postponed
Year 10 camps were scheduled for March/April. However, due to the possible spike in Covid-19 cases we have decided to postpone camps until a later date. We will update you once we have confirmed new dates.
Thank you for your understanding.
Student Leadership Day
Owing to the Red Traffic Light restrictions of COVID-19 we had to cancel the normal two-day leadership camp at Waharau. Instead 33 of the 36 student leaders came into school last Thursday for a one day workshop. We followed all the protocols of mask wearing, 1m+ spacing, individually packaged food and sanitising hands.
Student leaders learned about Rosehill College's goals for 2022, the characteristics of leadership, self-management, communication, well-being, formal dress requirements, duties and assemblies; plus taking part in outdoor education activities that build leadership in action. They practiced public speaking and met as student committees/groups to inventively plan activities for students, which they have mostly missed out on at school over the last two years.
New Staff Profiles:
Mrs Gaganpreet Kaur
My bachelor's degree in education was completed in 2019 with majors in Science and English. Biosciences is my master's degree. I've been captivated by biology since I was a child, and my curiosity has led to a significant increase in my knowledge of biology and science.
I also served as a Research Fellow at the Central University of Punjab's Molecular Genetics Laboratory, where I focused on plant genomes. In Genetics, Molecular Biology, and DNA Sequencing, I have a lot of experience.
As I've just started teaching at Rosehill College, I'm excited to assist, support, and encourage my students to develop critical thinking, creativity, and a desire to learn more about science.
Mrs Meagan Lawton
Prior to this I was at home with my three boys (now 15, 13, 10) and before my motherhood journey began I was at Birkenhead College teaching Art History and English. I was born and bred in Gisborne and while I love trips 'home' I do enjoy living in this neck of the woods, too. I'm looking forward to the year - whatever it might bring - and hope to get to know as many in the school community as I can.
Whaea Sylvia Patu
Tēnā Tātou katoa, Ko Whaea Sylvia Patu tōku ingōa, I am of New Zealand Māori and of Taranaki descent. I am strong in my culture with knowledge of identity and the importance of cultural sustainability. I have lived most of my life under my Maunga (Taranaki) and attended education through Kohanga Reo, Kura Kaupapa Māori Māori, Wharekura, and then onto Motueka High School (south Island) where I spent my last few years of education before joining the workforce.
I was fortunate to have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Primary School Teaching at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. As a Tauira, I have learnt so much about myself and my position in this world, I have learnt about facilitating, bi-culturalism, engaging and cultural sustainability and many more but more so applying Te Ao Māori pedagogy into practice. I develop skills and strategies that connect to each individual and our values by using Kaupapa Maori as a framework to build on theory through narratives and applying to practice through personal and professional lens.
Whakawhanaungatanga and Kaitiakitanga are two main components that I believe are tools to guide me in my practice but also connecting to not only the students but also to the wider community. I have a strong urgency to create success in every student but more so focusing on engaging and developing resilience in each individual as unique learners, what they bring to the learning table is koha and values that will be guided and scaffolded to advance and exceed beyond their own expectations. I am also a firm believer of failure before success and as Will Smith once said “Fail early, fail often, fail forward” I stand by this in order to promote Leadership skills through growth resolution. I look forward to working with you all. Mauri Tū Mauri Ora!
Mr Jitesh Prasad
I have joined Rosehill College (Business department) after a year of teaching at Albany Senior High School. I completed my graduate teaching degree from the University of Waikato in 2020, and an undergraduate degree in business majoring in accounting from Unitec in 2018.
Prior to being a teacher, I worked as an assistant accountant at Lotus Foreign Exchange limited, research supervisor and as a project manager at the College of Health, Massey University.
As a teacher, I aim to motivate students in ascertaining their inner knowledge, skills and strengths to achieve their academic and personal goals.

Year 9 Health Check
Dear parents, caregivers, students, and school staff,
The Ministry of Health requires school nurses to complete a health check with all of the Year 9 students. The Year 9 health check includes two parts and verbal consent from the student is obtained prior to continuing.
The first part of the assessment is a basic physical health check. This involves checking the student’s vision, hearing, blood pressure, weight, height and medical history. The purpose is to identify any current health related concerns and where appropriate develop an in school management plan which may involve referral to further health professionals for further assessment and intervention if required.
The second part is about the student‘s general well being which provides a picture of their risk and resiliency. The discussion will cover topics such as:
- Health factors relating to school, home and friends.
- Interests, both inside and outside of school.
- Education related to drugs, alcohol and sexual health.
- Mental health
The information given by students is kept private and confidential. A third party will only be involved if safety or risk related concerns are identified.
We, as school nurses, are looking forward to meeting all the amazing and lovely Year 9 students.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions

Pānui Hakinakina (Sports Bulletin)
Welcome back to 2022! There has been lots of planning going on behind the scenes in the hope that more sports will get to be played in 2022. While being in the Covid Protection Framework offers us more certainty there are still lots of unknowns we are working through so please bear with us while we navigate this. We will aim to provide the most up to date information as soon as we can, however we are often waiting on other organisations before we are able to communicate with you all. We also need to be mindful of the wants and needs of our school and community when making sporting decisions.
There are lots of sporting opportunities to be had this term, although final entry will depend on the CPF and any current Education, Health & Safety and Sport guidelines and requirements.
If you would like to register online to play sports you can do so using the form below. Signing up does not commit you to playing, it just allows us to contact you when trials start to take place.
I look forward to seeing you in the Sports Department this year.
Nicola Bailey
Director of Sport
Sign Ups
Sign ups for all sports will take place on Tuesday 8 February and Wednesday 9 February at lunchtime in the Sports Centre for Year 11, 12 and 13 students and any Year 9 and 10 students who wish to register for Athletics, Softball, Cricket, Swimming, Archery or Water Polo.

The trial for Senior Volleyball will be on Tuesday 8 Feb 4-6pm in the Sports Centre for boys and Gym 1 for girls.
Only those who are trailing will be able to attend, there can be NO spectators in either facility.
To be able to trial you will need to provide proof of full vaccination to Mrs Morling or Mrs Bailey. If you do not have proof you will be unable to trial and we will be unable to register you to play.
Please ensure you arrive at trials changed and ready to go and with a mask which needs to be worn when you aren’t actively participating.
