The Cotton Gin

The First invention of industrialized agriculture!

The beginning of industrialized agriculture.

Invented in 1794 by Eli Whitney, this machine was the first machine to be able to quickly separate cotton seeds from the fiber.

Reason for Invention

The cotton gin was invented to separate the cotton seeds from their fibers. This was first done by manual labor, which took a lot of time. The cotton gin replaced the need for manual labor, but dramatically increased the need for slaves. Advanced versions of the cotton gin are still in use today for clothe production.

The Inventor

Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin, was born on December 8, 1765. He invented to cotton gin to decrease the need for slaves, but it actually increased slavery in the south.

The cotton gin dramatically sped up the harvest of cotton, but more historically, it hugely increased the need for slavery in the south in an increasingly abolitionist nation.
