A Letter From Dr. Tennies, Our Principal
Woo Hoo! Welcome September and one month complete in our school year journey. As the principal, I am so excited to begin partnerships with A.P.T.T. at Chestatee. Everyone always asks, “What does A.P.T.T. stands for?” Beyond the amazing progress students make who are participating with their families, it means “Academic Parent Teacher Teams.” A.P.T.T. is a nationally recognized model from Dr. Marie Paredes fully supported by the Georgia Department of Education. Families work hand in hand with teachers and kids to accomplish big goals! We have seen fantastic results in the two years we have been actively involved in the program and are now launching our third year.
The evidence is consistent, positive and convincing: families have a major influence on their children’s achievement. When schools, families, and community groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer and like school more! (Henderson and Mapp, 2002)
Our first night was Thursday, August 30th for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade families. The response and participation were amazing. The parking lot was packed and there were plenty of smiling faces on campus. We were pleased to be able to provide childcare for our families, so that the adults could devote time together in the classroom. Welcome to a new way to do Curriculum Night! Thursday, September 6th we will partner with our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade families.
Our first count showed that 70% of our families attended August 30th and we would love to increase that number. We understand that sometimes preplanned events get in the way of you being able to attend. Our Family Engagement Coordinator, Meg, will be providing make up sessions for people that need to get the information and tools. She can be reached at mkillingsworth@forsyth.k12.ga.us Reach out to her, she is a wonderful resource here @ the T!
Kindly,
Dr. Polly Tennies
Principal

A Few Words From our Family Engagement Coordinator
On the day of Open House, everyone could feel the excitement in the air. New beginnings, new teachers, a new year.
On August 21, we had our Watch Dog Dad Kickoff Night, and there was the exhilaration again. Dads, granddads, uncles and important male role models to our kids filled our cafeteria to eat pizza and hear about this fantastic program.
Again, last Thursday, as I stood in the lobby to greet families for APTT and Curriculum Night, I felt the enthusiasm again.
Families came to see the teacher.
They came to support their children.
They came to find out how they could help at home.
Families came to create a partnership with the school.
As Chestatee staff, it made me feel great. It showed me that we would conquer this school year through partnership. As a mom of two Chestatee students, I felt supported with a night like this to help student learning through our partnership.
So thank you, Chestatee… From our eager kids to our amazing staff to our supportive and involved families. This school has the best people who come together for the good of our kids. You make me proud, and I thank you for all you do!
If you missed APTT, please try to come to a make-up session during the school day. If these times do not work, contact me for an appointment. I would love to catch you up!
Stop by and see me soon!
