General Information
- The Final Level Down window for the Spring semester is open December 4th - 6th for any student wishing to level down from a PAP or AP class. Please fill out the level down form on the CHHS Counseling Website.
- Seniors- ALL transcript requests for college, military and/or NCAA need to be done through Parchment. Please see Ms. Miller in the Go Center if you need help accessing your account.
- Seniors - FAFSA applications opened October 1st.
- Community Scholar Ambassador Volunteer Hours- If you did any volunteer service hours this month, please submit your volunteer hours monthly and encourage other volunteers to do the same.

JUNIOR MEETINGS
Junior parents are encouraged to set up an appointment with your student's counselor to discuss senior schedule, graduation, and post-high school planning.
To sign up for a meeting, please follow your counselor’s link below and reserve an appointment time. If none of the appointment times work for you, please email your counselor to find another time. Counselors are assigned by students’ last names:

Did you know GCISD counselors have had the privilege of traveling to colleges around the state and nation to visit GCISD alumni and admissions officers in order to get an insider's perspective on the college admissions process?

This year students will be using Naviance, "a comprehensive college and career readiness solution that helps districts and schools align student strengths and interests to postsecondary goals, improving student outcomes and connecting learning to life."

- Complete the Strengths Explorer located in About Me → My Assessments → Strengths Explorer. Strengths Explorer is a strengths assessment that assesses 10 talent themes for individuals and identifies each student’s three strongest emerging talents. Upon completion, students will be provided with explanations of their top three themes and will learn how to capitalize on their success and discover what they need to do next to continue building on their strengths.
- Complete the Learning Styles Inventory located in About Me → My Assessments → Learning Styles Inventory. The Learning Styles Inventory assessment allows students to boost academic potential by recognizing their natural learning style, discover better learning strategies, and gain career development skills. The assessment provides students with a report that can be used to increase understanding of the student’s needs at school.
GO CENTER
GCISD College & Career Newsletter
The GO CENTER is for all students, not just seniors, to obtain information and guidance regarding college, career, and scholarship opportunities. If you would like to schedule a time to meet with Ms. Miller please fill out the referral request form.
SCHOLARSHIPS - seniors there are over 30 nationwide scholarships; be sure to check the scholarship webpage.
SENIORS- Please be working on your scholarship applications at the same time you are applying to your colleges! There are MANY scholarships due in the fall! Check out our GCISD Scholarship Webpage for updated information.

FAFSA Information
FAFSA https://fafsa.ed.gov/ - CHHS School Code: 441408
- Based on parental/guardian financial status
- Request your FSA ID now - takes 2-3 days for authorization.
- FAFSA - Opens Oct. 1 and should be completed as soon as possible
- 2020-2021 FAFSA application will use 2018 tax return
- FAFSA funds are distributed on a first come first serve basis
- Completion of the application takes approximately 20-30 minutes providing you have information necessary with you at the time of application including parents prior income tax return.
- Types of aid include: Scholarships, Grants, Work-Study, Loans-last option

DID YOU KNOW?
- Senate Bill 21 effective September 1- set age to buy cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or other tobacco products to 21 aiming to stop teens from getting addicted. Estimated 95% of smokers start before age 21.
- Nationwide stats (CDC, as of 9/27/19):
II. 16% of patients are under 18 years
III. The specific chemical exposure(s) causing lung injuries associated with e-cigarette product use, or vaping, remains unknown at this time. iv. Number of middle and high school tobacco users increased by 36% between 2017 and 2018
Xanax “bars”
- Prescription treatment for anxiety (10x stronger than Valium)
- Can be sold in bars (pictured below) that can be broken into smaller doses
- Highly addictive, quick tolerance build-up
- “Downer”
- Fentanyl- street “Xanax” can be laced with fentanyl (50x stronger than heroin) to make it stronger & more expensive, which also makes it deadly; It’s common to buy Alprazolam (generic Xanax) in bulk off the dark web and press it into pills
- Student using recreationally will appear highly relaxed, calm, sedated, possibly fall asleep, feel like they’re in a dreamlike state
- Student using as prescribed for treatment for anxiety will not have these signs

The next available CBE will be February 8th. Registration is due no later than January 7th to the counseling office. Registrations should be available soon, be sure to check the GCISD CBE website for more information.
The 2019-2020 CBE Fall Registration is now open for the Nov. 9th exam date.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS OCT. 9, 2019.

- Students planning on play sports in college - please remind your counselors every time you see them.
- Make sure to set up an account within the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Community Service Ambassador Program
CSAP is coordinated on behalf of CHHS by the Volunteer Community Service Ambassador Committee with support from the CHHS Counseling Office. The program is designed to encourage all 9th-12th grade CHHS students to serve their community by performing at least 100 hours of approved community service. Students meeting this requirement will be recognized as Community Service Ambassadors upon graduation, and will be eligible to
purchase a special cord for their graduation robes. Full program guidelines for Community Service Ambassador Program, and service hour logs can be found on the CSAP Website.
Beginning November 12, 2018 each Class will have a specific email address to which their inquiries regarding CSAP should be sent. This email will be monitored by the Committee Member assigned to serve as liaison for the Class.

Weekend Food
All students who are current participants of the Free and Reduced Lunch Program are eligible to receive weekend food from the counseling office.
