IB Community Projects Newsletter

MYP Year 3

What is an IB Community Project?

Every year our MYP Year 3 students complete a project called the Community Project. This is a semester-long project where they select a need in the community and work to help make a difference in that need. Here is where YOU come in! Some of our projects have goals of collecting donations of items or money to be donated to specific causes. Please give this newsletter a good read through and see if there is anything that speaks to your heart. This has not been the normal year in giving to our community, so maybe there is a way for you to contribute to the IB Community Projects and make a difference yourself! Be sure to click on links to get more information or find out how to make your donations.

Here is a sampling of our Community Projects from 2021!

Donating to the Homeless by Victor, Mario, Nathan, Daniel, and Jaden

The boys write: we are finding old, unwanted clothes to donate to homeless people in the area of Miami. This will help many of the homeless. There are way too many homeless people around and we can't help them all but at least we can help out some.

Do you have clothes that you can donate to the homeless?

Serve Coastal Ecosystems by Kamilat, Gabriel, and Henna

This group writes: changes in coastal ecosystems affect mostly coastal residents/ economies in Florida. Our goal is to use different online media and research to spread awareness on the current situation with the coastal areas and educate people on why action needs to be taken to protect the coasts and how they can help.

Read more at https://sites.google.com/view/servecoastalecosystems/home. It is a beautiful website and there is a Go Fund Me link where you can help them raise their goal of $5000 to support the Nature Conservancy.

Here is a little more information about their project and the Nature Conservancy:

The organization we are raising funds for is the Nature Conservancy, which is a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive. Thanks to more than a million members and the dedicated efforts of over 400 scientists, they impact conservation in multiple countries and territories. Their current mission is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. To achieve this, we must boldly address the biodiversity and climate crises over the next decade. By maximizing our ability to effect change between now and 2030, we can shape a brighter future for people and our planet.

Humane Society of Broward County by Sophia, Haris, Nicholas, and Ahmed

They say: we are trying to see what we can do to help the Humane Society of Broward County. They have an entire wish list of donations we can provide, like towels, food, toys and so much more. You can check their entire list here: https://humanebroward.com/donate-old/wishlist/ We are doing this because we want to make sure our animals are kept in great condition!

This group is looking for donations of anything that has to do with pets: toys, collars, towels, and treats. Other things, like silverware and office essentials, are also requested. Please check out the link provided to know what to bring to school for their donation.

Puppies and Kittens Rescue Fund

This group is also asking for donations to go to the Puppies and Kittens Rescue Fund, which can be made online at https://puppieskittensrescuefund.org/. Please put in the comments that the donations came from Franklin Academy Pembroke Pines IB Community Project.

Helping the Homeless People by Faiqah, Sofia, and Nicholas

Our project is to help the homeless people who have nowhere to live, or have no food or water. We want to help them by raising money for the homeless shelters. Hopefully, they'll be able to use the money for things they need.

STOP LITTERING AND START RECYCLING! by Victoria

Keeping our communities clean is our civic duty. The cleanliness of our communities directly affects our health and the environment's well-being. To improve the quality of our communities, we should take the initiative to recycle and to clean up after ourselves. My community project focuses on educating citizens about littering and recycling.
