Restorative Practices
Recap Notes:
- Anthony pointed out that if we want to do Restorative Practices, we have nothing to restore unless we have built connections and relationships.
- We want to build a community that honors each member's value. We learned about the Mayan greeting, In Lak'ech Ala K'in, which means I am another you.
- We made a Circle Agreement.
- We Pair/Shared. Anthony used the questions: What is one concern on your mind? What is one thing you are grateful for?
- We practiced effective listening.
- We practiced authentic sharing.
- Anthony talked about the humanization/ de-humanization process.
- He pointed out that in just a few minutes of pair/ share we grew in our understanding, empathy, and expanded connections with each other.
- We were reminded we might practice checking in with our students once a week? All year? Anthony reminded us that students will check in with us by their behavior in class, so we might as well be proactive and ask them how they are doing ahead of time.
- We learned about the lessons available by remembering penguins and redwoods (warmth/ survival by being together, interconnected roots).
- We were reminded of how to use a talking piece, and to say thank you when we receive it!
- We learned a simple definition of Restorative Practices.
- We learned about the TO Punitive/ NOT Neglectful/ FOR Permissive/ WITH Restorative continuum that ranged depending on control and support.
- Teachers shared with each other, based on those squares in that continuum, who the big influences in their life were.
- Anthony thanked us for our active and meaningful participation. Anthony offered the chance for some teachers to share their gratitude to the staff. He asked us to finish by thanking each other for our service.
