The Wilmot Word: 5-6-22

A Busy Week at Wilmot

We are off to a great start to the month of May. This week we recognized our teachers and thanked them for all that they do for our students. The Wilmot PTO planned a wonderful week with special treats and gifts for our fabulous teaching staff. Earlier this week the PTO gave each student a flower as they entered the building to share with their teachers. This was so sweet and everyone enjoyed handing out flowers. We also celebrated Mrs. Martinez for Nurse’s Day and thanked her for keeping us all safe and healthy!

Students and staff enjoyed the May Mash Up this week. Tie dye day was a hit and students loved playing games in their classrooms. Monday is estimation day. Students will have a chance to estimate the number of objects in a jar.

I also want to thank Mrs. Dubin for organizing a wonderful Art Share experience for 5th grade students this week.

The LIVE! Annual Wilmot Talent Show is BACK! Students in 3rd- 5th Grades

Wilmot Students and Families,

The LIVE! Annual Wilmot Talent Show is BACK! Students in 3rd- 5th grade may audition for this exciting event! In order to ensure participants are prepared, please submit your video auditions by Monday May 23rd. Group acts encouraged! Solo acts must be consulted with Mrs. Dimas prior to auditions. Acts can include, but are not limited to, karate, gymnastics, dance, singing, piano, and magic. Please use parental discretion regarding the content of your student’s act (music, lyrics, dance moves, costumes). Acts will not be included in the talent show if content is inappropriate or students are unprepared at auditions. If participating in a group act, please remember to keep appropriate distances!

All acts should be 90 seconds (1 min 30 sec) or less. If your act is longer, we will need to shorten it.

Different from years past, there will be limited stage crew (5th grade only).

We are looking forward to having a great show!

Erin's Law Presentation - May 9, 2022

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Erin’s Law (House Bill 6193) was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades Pre-K through 12. District 109 partners with Childhood Victories, Inc., an organization founded by Victor Pacini who is a motivational speaker and a survivor of sexual abuse. Speakers from Childhood Victories, Inc. provide programming for our students that teaches them basic skills to keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. The program, Be Seen and Heard 2.0, is developmentally appropriate, interactive, aligned with learning standards, and will cover the following topics:

  • Distinguishing safe from unsafe touches

  • Safety rules at home and school

  • Saying “NO”

  • Secrets

  • It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches them

  • Telling a trusted adult

The staff from Childhood Victories, Inc. will be presenting to our elementary students on the following dates:

  • Wilmot: Monday, May 9th

Parents can view Victor Pacini’s parent video to preview the concepts of the Be Seen and Heard 2.0 program.

Requests to Opt-Out: If you prefer that your child opt-out of this prevention education session, please email your child’s principal by Friday May 6. Please also feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Joanna Ford

Thank you again for supporting the fundraiser!! Happy Mother’s Day!

BATHROOM CHANGES (2nd posting)

Illinois HB156 provides that menstrual hygiene products shall be made available in bathrooms of every school building that are open for student use in grades 4 through 12 during the regular school day. Dispensers have been installed in all bathrooms at the middle schools and are in the process of being installed in the elementary schools. This measure allows for free and equitable access to products for all who use the bathroom facilities, while also creating a supportive school environment for all 109 students. If this prompts questions for your child, we would encourage you to discuss it at home.
