Thunderbolt Times

January 2021

Welcome to Second Semester!

We hope that you had a safe and joyful holiday season, and wish you a Happy New Year with wonderful things to come. As you know, we are currently on "short term virtual for all" and look forward to the return of our students on Tuesday, January 19th. As a reminder, please be sure your student comes prepared for a successful school day by remembering to bring a fully charged Chromebook every day, a mask (and an extra in the backpack), refillable bottle for water, and any other needed supplies. We would like to thank parents, guardians, and students for their continued cooperation with our mitigation strategies on campus. Please click here for the most current parent update sent by the district.

Tech Assistance

If your student is having issues with Canvas, Zoom or any other tech related problem, you may call the front office so that we may help you troubleshoot. If it is determined that the only way to solve an issue is to "submit a ticket" , office staff will let you know. Click on this link to access the google form, "ticket" to alert our IT department of an issue that you need assistance with. Please be sure to fill out the form completely, and provide as much detail as possible so that they may fully understand the problem. The IT department may reach out to you, but if they do not email you back, please check back intermittently to see if the problem has been resolved. We ask for your patience, as the IT department receives many tickets and works as quickly as possible. The most important thing you can do after submitting this ticket, is to communicate with the teacher to let them know what is happening.

Canvas

Canvas is the program used while virtual and in person at our school. Teachers regularly post updates, zoom links, and daily assignments for students to complete. If you would like access to see these assignments, you will need to become an "observer". Please click here for detailed instructions on how to do this.

Power School

Power School is the program parents, students, teachers and staff use to access student schedules, grades, attendance, and emergency contacts. It is also an easy way to email teachers. If you haven't done so, we highly encourage our parents to create a "Parent account" for easy access to these features. For assistance in creating an account, either stop by the office (with your ID) or call us at 602-467-6500 and we will walk you through how to set up your account.

Mrs. Ann-Marie Champion- MSEd.- Guidance Department

I have worked in DVUSD for over two decades and love my job. I am a middle schooler at heart, so this grade level is my favorite. When I am not at work I am often outdoors working on my backyard farm. I look forward to the upcoming school year and getting to know my students and families better.

What is a fun fact about you?

I was in the first graduating class of students at DVHS.

What College or University did you attend?

I attended Prescott College and Phoenix College (after attending GCC).

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Cleveland Ohio and moved to Phoenix in 1979.

What hobby or activity do you enjoy?

I LOVE to garden. I am building a sustainable food forest in my backyard.

Ms. Mary Kaczmarowski- Social Studies Educator/ BS in Education

I am an Arizona native and have lived in the northwest valley all my life. I have seen so many changes come to this state is still amazes me that we are still growing, and growing, and growing.

Teaching is a second career for me as I spent the better part of 20 years in medical support services. It seems like yesterday but I have been with Deer Valley 17 years. I enjoy learning about our past. We need to know where we are coming from so that we can guide our own and make informed decisions.

Throughout my life I have felt the importance of those great 'memorable' teachers and how they shaped my life. I know the importance of a teacher to help students grow emotionally and academically. I have worked at Anthem Elementary with both 7th and 8th graders. I enjoy the continuation of my work here at Desert Sky.

What is a fun fact about you?

I have been to 37 states and I have 4 brothers and a sister. I guess that is fun? :-)

What College or University did you attend?

I went to University of Central Florida in Orlando, class of 2003. Moon Valley High School class of 1985.

Where did you grow up?

I was born at St. Joe's here in Phoenix in the late 60s when Phoenix was tiny. I currently live 1.2 miles from where I was born and grew up.

What hobby or activity do you enjoy?

I enjoy reading, being outdoors and going to the beach.
