A message from Mrs. Rudder
I would like to thank everyone for welcoming me to Penngrove. What a wonderful school!! I'm starting to figure out the fastest ways to get around the campus and to remember the correct bell schedule.
It's been fun to reconnect with teachers and staff I know from my days at McNear, McKinley and McDowell. My tongue still stumbles when I try to say the school name and not start with Mc...so if you call and hear me say McPenngrove you will know why!
The best part about re-entering the educational system is that I again have a chance to interact with students and delight in watching them in their learning process. I even get to help teach small groups in some classrooms!
I want to thank all of the teachers, especially Ms. Olufs and Ms. Barrell, for the wonderful activities they arranged related to the eclipse. Unfortunately the sun didn't peak out on Monday until well past the time of the eclipse.
The next big event at Penngrove is the Jogathon on September 8th. I know that we are hoping to beat our goal of $50,000. Don't forget that you can donate easily through the Paypal link on our school website!

Message from Mr. Z
Recess Renaissance is looking for volunteers!
On Mondays, we provide Freddy's Creation Station, which is an art cart available to all students to use their creativity with recycled goods. On Wednesdays, we offer the Mileage Club, which is a walking/running program and offers incentives for the number of laps they complete.
We are looking for volunteers for Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays during the lunch hour 12:30-1:15, grades 1-6. In the past parents have done cartooning, art, knitting, scooter boards, music, parachute, and other activities. If you have something you would like to do with the kids during their lunch hour, please contact Suzanne Duffy at sduffy@petk12.org.
An update from Penn STEM
Welcome to another year full of hands-on projects and activities in our Penn STEM program! In case you don’t know me, I’m Adrienne Olufs and I’m the STEM Coach for our school. I get to go into every classroom and work with every student! Our projects and activities range from grade level specific to school-wide. We focus work on fostering a growth mindset, flexible thinking, and the engineering design process in a project-based learning environment.
Our first project is a school-wide cardboard challenge, inspired by Caine’s Arcade. This is our second year with this project and students are very excited! In each class, students have started their design process by brainstorming the characteristics of what they consider a great arcade game. They are now working on a detailed sketch of what their game will look like.
This year we are asking students to bring their own box and materials needed to build their arcade game. We will have duct tape on hand and stations where students can get help from adults with any cutting that they need done. In 2 weeks, we’ll send home the official list of supplies that your student needs to create their arcade game but please talk with your child about their ideas to start gathering supplies ahead of time if you can.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: You’ll find an official invitation to this school-wide event in your child’s Wednesday folder. We do need volunteers to help students with their projects during our build time 8:40-10:10 on Wednesday, September 13th. If you have a sheetrock knife, power tool, or something that you can bring to use at our “cutting station”, please sign up here.

Message from the Garden and Environmental Education Program
Look for a Pop-up Farmstand next Wednesday at the top of the stairs!
Kindergarteners have planted several kinds of seeds in their garden beds by the play structure and are excited to see lettuce, spinach, beets, and sugar snap peas coming up! Carrots are slow, we learned. When not watering those seedlings, K students looked at plushy garden animal toys and counted legs, (six on an insect!) and read a book called Everything Grows!.
All students have spent time becoming familiar with the tools in the garden and their safe use and storage. Primary students planted seeds and pumpkins plants (cross your fingers for pumpkins for the Harvest Festival) and 5th and 6th graders made wonderful eclipse simulators for the school to share last Monday, and indirect viewers to share. Thanks to everyone who sent in materials and who helped on Monday.
Produce like tomatoes, cucumbers and summer squash are ripening in our garden and next Monday there will probably be a pop-up FarmStand where families can see what we’ve harvested and buy ingredients for a weekend meals. Anyone with excess produce or fruit may bring it to the garden at 11:00 - 11:30 on Wednesday and we’ll put it out, too.
Each year Penngrove School exhibits at the Heirloom Exposition and are rewarded by a share of the proceeds from the event. Last year we received a $400.00 check from Baker Creek Seed Company. If you want to help set up on September 4, or break down our booth on September 7th or 8th, contact Ms. Barrell at mbarrell@petk12.org.
Interested in volunteering to garden with kids or help with the farmstand, or take and tweet pictures of the program in action? Here is a link to the volunteer schedule/sign-up.
Summer Meals Keep Kids Eating Well
Good nutrition shouldn’t take a summer vacation! It’s important to encourage more children to participate in food programs that provide balanced meals over the summer months. USDA’s Summer Food Service Program is administered locally by the California Department of Education and is available to all children 18 and under regardless of their type of school. No enrollment paperwork, identification or income verification is required.
Here are some reasons to promote summer meal programs in your community:
- Summer meals follow strict nutrition guidelines similar to the National School Lunch Program. Children have access to milk, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, all under-consumed food groups identified in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
- Many of the foods featured in the summer meals program are grown and produced right here in California!
- Nearly 2 million of California’s low-income students are missing out on these free, balanced meals, putting their health and academic achievement at risk and leaving millions of federally allocated dollars on the table.
You can help families find a summer meals location near them. Choose from these three options: text FOOD (or COMIDA for Spanish) to 877-877, dial 2-1-1 for city directories or visit http://bit.ly/CASummerMeals. Many summer meal sites boost participation by offering free activities like reading and literacy programs, nutrition education and physical activity options. Find free activity ideas and promotional materials online at http://www.SacSummerLunchbox.org.
