December 2019
Welcome To December!
Hello Knox Families!
Welcome to December. November was a month filled with lots of learning and positive school culture activities. These included: Brag Tag events, our Knox Turkey Drive, our Bella's House of Hope shoe give away for all 600 students, Red Ribbon Spirit Week, TKF Peacekeeping assemblies, the Butterfly Project in 6th grade History classes, Student-led conferences, Aladdin, Jr. auditions, Primetime students took a college tour of SDSU, lunchtime Staff v. Students Volleyball, as well as our first soccer and basketball games, and the addition of our new school mural. Check out the details below for all of these amazing Knox events and be sure to play the video from the Bella's House of Hope shoe event.
Students have been focused and engaged in class, making up absences in Saturday and Sunday School, taking advantage of the late bus on Monday and Tuesdays to attend tutoring, and morning Achieve reading lab. As we move into the last 6 weeks of the semester, please continue to support your student by having them check their Power School assignments regularly, make up all absences, make sure they arrive on time daily to participate in our morning Achieve 3000 reading time in Advisory, as well as reaching out to their teachers if needed. Our staff directory can be found here: https://www.sandiegounified.org/schools/knox/staff-directory
We also hosted multiple events for our parents as partners in education. Thank you to our parents that supported students at the Lego Robotics Competition and those that came out for Student-led Conferences, as well as our parents who conferences with their student at home. Our CEP Gear Up Partners hosted a parent workshop: Common Core to College. Thank you to our 5th grade parents that have come out for our articulation presentations at Knox as well as at the Elementary schools. We are excited to have you join us at Knox next year! This month, we hope our Knox families will join us on 12/11 at 8:30 for the next wellness workshop for parents.
This month, our Bulldog Way theme is Friendly. Each Advisory teacher will select the student who has demonstrated this characteristic. Students will get a brag tag and a reward. Please ask your student about their Brag Tags!
We continue to spend our mornings in Advisory reading. Students are logging into the program Achieve 3000, in order to promote our school-wide literacy focus. Please ask your student about this program and their current Lexile level. You received a copy of your child's reading level during Student-led Conferences.
Students can also read articles at home or in morning reading lab from 7:30-8:00 every morning at Knox.
Morning Achieve 3000 Reading Lab Schedule: 7:30-8:00am
Monday- Room 6
Tuesday-Room 3
Wednesday-Room S1
Thursday-Room 103
Friday-Room 206
Thank you to our parents that have been participating in our parent circles and workshops. We appreciate your partnership.
We encourage all students to read for 20 minutes a night independently. Students will be checking out independent reading books during library visits with their English class.
All Knox students will have nightly math homework. Homework is assigned from a math packet that is given to the students at the start of each chapter.
During the winter break, it is important that students get caught up on any missing assignments, as well as continue to read their articles on Achieve 3000. We have created a Knox Instagram account to give students information about current school events, as well as to promote rewards and Brag Tags for reading on Achieve 3000 as well as earning incentives for attendance and the Bulldog Way.
Thank you for your partnership!
Sincerely,
Principal Potter

History Update: The Butterfly Project
All 6th grade students had the opportunity to continue their learning with the Butterfly Project.
The Butterfly Project is a call to action through education, the arts and memorial making. It uses the lessons of the Holocaust to educate about the dangers of hatred and bigotry and cultivates empathy and social responsibility. Participants paint ceramic butterflies that are permanently displayed as symbols of resilience and hope, with the goal of creating 1.5 million butterflies around the world—one for each child who perished in the Holocaust, and honoring the survivors.
The Butterfly Project will transform resistance through art and education, and empower people to take actions against injustice, partner with everyone that currently has or wants to build a connection to history and honoring those who died in the Holocaust, easily get ceramic butterflies into the hands of people of all faiths through schools, museums, and community centers, leading to bold artistic displays, and be included in classrooms across the country as an important part of Holocaust and anti-bullying education.

Parent Portal- Grades and Attendance
Attendance Matters
The STAY curriculum focuses on truancy and attendance. The school-based instruction explores factors which contribute to truancy, and the resulting consequences of missing school. Topics range from goal-setting, coping skills, support system, self-evaluation, and both personal and environmental factors that contribute to truancy.
We will continue to provide incentives to students that clear all of their missed days, showing responsible attendance!
