IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Path to Authorization
Aspen School District is in the candidacy stage to become an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) school.
This process involves district work in philosophy, organization, and curriculum. Teachers are collaborating to create units that utilize their curriculum resources while meeting the Colorado Academic Standards and IB learning objectives. District leaders are developing systems to ensure a cohesive, clear, and comprehensive learning experience for students between classes, grade levels, and schools.
On November 8 and 9, ASD had an IB Middle Year's Programme (MYP) authorization consult visit. Our consultant met with 21 groups of 109 stakeholders, including staff, parents, and students. We are now ready to submit our formal application! Our goal is to earn the MYP authorization before next school year, and Primary Years Programme (PYP) authorization the following year.
IB Profile Raffle Winners
AMS and all IB schools support the development of the IB learner profile attributes. Sometimes, when a student goes above and beyond and exemplifies one of the traits, they may receive an IB Learner Profile Ticket. They can enter their ticket into a weekly raffle to win a prize. The winners so far this year have been: Porter Hopson, Ella Yaw, Cody Shepard, Miranda Morales, Alfred Kaplinski, Estella Winter, Chris Gilmorth, Sam Weber, Lyla Osbo, and Thomas Flynn.
8 Subject Areas: Design
Makers Class with Will Poe
The Maker's classroom is full of students' creative energy and excellent resources. 3D printers, a Glowforge laser cutter, a Mayku Multiplier, and a myriad of building supplies are utilized to make students' designs. Will Poe's class was featured on the Onshape blog for the innovative use of the software. Makers class combines high-tech and low-tech skill building in this new-age woodshop.
Students are adding to a collaborative holiday monument that combines 3D-printed joints, metal rods, and laser-cut pieces.
STEM class with Frances Gibson
7th & 8th-grade STEM students designed, built, and revised bottle rockets and launched them while protecting a raw egg (aka their egg-o-naut) from breaking. Their next challenge is to make prosthetics.
All STEM students learned to code using their Chromebooks to direct a Sphero through a set course. Now the 5th graders are building Circuit-run Bristlebots.
