Student Walk Out & Rally Planning
Dear Parents and Guardians:
It has come to our attention that some students are planning a walk out of school on February 28th in response to the tragic events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
While we support the desire of our students to express their opinions, we do not support students disrupting the school day or doing so in a manner that would jeopardize their own safety. I have been working with our Student Government Association (SGA) to plan an event during a block period on March 14th. This is a date that has been identified nationally as a day to walk out in response to this tragedy. I have stressed to our student leaders that I want to support their desire to have their voices heard, but I want it to be done in a positive and safe way where they can serve as agents of change. Walking out to just walk out of school will not get results, I have challenged them to look at what they can do to facilitate change. This will allow students to share their opinions while remaining safe on our campus. This would be an optional rally where students who attend this rally during the allotted time would not impact their attendance. If a student leaves the school campus during this time, or walks out of class outside of the designated time, it will be considered an unexcused absence.
We understand that students feel very strongly, as do we, about the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida and school safety. Our goal is to make sure that they are able to express their opinions in a supporting and safe environment.

United We Learn Competition
For the second year, MCPS is sponsoring the systemwide student contest, United We Learn: All Means All. Students are being asked to use visual art and the written word to celebrate diversity while exploring the matter of equity for all. The contest challenges students to think critically about what equity means and how attitudes, traditions, systemic practices and/or legal matters impede or support the concept that “All Means All.” The contest is open to students from all grade levels. Submissions will be judged by level (elementary, middle and high) and by medium. Entries must be created by groups of two students or more. More details are available on the contest website. The contest will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 16.
