MCMS: Keeping Connected
October 2022
Principal's Message
Hello MCMS Families,
As we have a little over a month under our belts of the 2022 - 2023 school year, everyone is starting to get into their school routines once again. Class meetings are underway and have been going extremely well! Learners are sharing and learning about one another during their class meeting time.
As in years past, we are really working hard at building a culture of reading. Many learners are sharing what they are reading and discussing their books with one another. Some have displayed their "currently reading" books on their lockers. We are also showing our learners that we value reading by having our learners take 15 minutes of their Baron Time to engage in reading. Additionally, learners will be logging their steps of reading. We are asking that learners continue to log their steps of reading at home. Therefore, starting on October 6th, they will log their "at-home steps."
In September, we had a focus on Responsibility and being Responsible Citizens as part of our Difference Maker Qualities. Next month's focus will be on Honesty and being a Reflective Learner.
We appreciate your support in building this culture of reading as well! Thank you for all you do each and every day to support your middle school learner in their education! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We appreciate your continued support!
Sincerely,
Krystle Nemeth and Liz Bender (starting 10/10/22)

Parent Advisory Council Meeting: October 11th, 2022
Manheim Central Middle School qualifies for Title 1 funds provided by the federal government. We will discuss the purpose of Title 1, assessments, standards, and the rights under ESSA. Each year we also review the Home School Compact and the Parental Engagement Policy. Families can provide valuable input and/or revise these documents on Tuesday, October 11th from 6:30-7:30. Our goal is to involve as many families as possible in the revision process. We hope to see you there!
Learner Support Time
To provide learners with an opportunity to get assistance on schoolwork (not just homework), Manheim Central Middle School is proud to offer Learner Support Time (LST) after school for ANY learner wishing to get additional assistance. Learner Support Time will begin on Monday, October 3rd, 2022.
Fifth and sixth grades will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and seventh and eighth grades will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:50 until 3:55 PM. LST will be staffed with at least one (typically two) MCMS learning facilitators who can assist learners. This free service is available whenever students need it. The schedule for LST will be posted on the school calendar. To access go to manheimcentral.org – Schools – Middle School – Events Calendar.
We just ask that we have documented prior approval from parents for all learners participating (see form below). Learner Support Time is held in the Media Center, and students will be dismissed out the main entrance to the Middle School. All learners will be dismissed at 3:55 PM, so we also ask that parents are prompt in picking learners up if they stay the entire time. All communication should occur by 12:00 PM the day you would like your child to participate in LTS. Please feel free to send in the attached form to the main office or contact Manheim Central Middle School at 717-664-1700.
If you would like your child to regularly participate in Learner Support Time, please complete the attached form. Forms are also available in the Main Office!
Home Reading Begins!
Fall Fest - November 4th, 2022
Fall Fest is happening on November 4th, 2022 at Manheim Central Middle School. It will happen in two different waves, with the first wave being 5th and 6th from 5:00 - 6:00 PM, and the second wave for 7th and 8th from 7:00 - 8:30pm. The night is completely free and fun!
We are going to need volunteers to make this successful and you will need your clearances on file with the district. To find the links, go to the district page, click on parents, and then volunteering. Think outside the box, volunteers could be grandparents, close friends, Aunts or Uncles that enjoy this age group! If you are available, consider doing both times. Thanks for investing in our youth!

Paint Night at MCMS
Flexible Instruction Days
The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) approved the use of Flexible Instruction Days (FID) as an alternate form of instruction in place of a day otherwise canceled due to inclement weather. PDE will count this as a full day of school and MCSD would not need to use a snow make up day. The District has been approved to use up to a maximum of five (5) FID for the 2022-2023 school year.
On a FID Day, learners will complete work from home. The FID is an asynchronous (not live) school day that is run on a 2-hour delay schedule. Assignments will be handed out in advance and attendance is determined by work submission. All work must be completed and submitted electronically by the end of the FID for a student to be “present”. In the event work is completed with pencil/paper, it can be turned in at the start of the next school day for attendance. Regular attendance procedures apply for excused/unexcused absence.
We will use our Blackboard email system to notify parents 24-48 hours that there is potential for an FID day. We would then use our phone system, local news, and social media to announce on the day of the FID. Traditional Snow Day Closures may still be used.
Manheim Central Basketball Fall Clinic
