Delta Zeta

Twin Cities Alumnae Bi-Monthly Mini - June 2013

President's letter

As you plan your summer activities, I hope you’ll consider joining your Delta Zeta sisters at an upcoming outing or connect with a fellow sister over dinner on a patio celebrating our sisterhood.

Please consider volunteering at the annual Starkey Gala – So the World May Hear – on Sunday, July 28. We need 25 volunteers for the gala beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the evening. Please see the additional details in this newsletter. The gala is a wonderful way to support one of our National Philanthropy Partners.

At our August Board Meeting, we will be finalizing our calendar of events for the upcoming year. If you would like to host an event or have suggestions for a potential event, please don’t hesitate to let me know. You can drop me an email at

Please join me in thanking Kristen Kalinowski for serving on our board. She has resigned from her role for personal reasons. Additionally, please join me in welcoming Katie Whitehead to the board. Katie will serve in the role of philanthropy chairman.

On behalf of our chapter, I also want to express my appreciation to the following:

  • Holly Thompson and the Lakeville Family Bowl for hosting an amazing Bowling Event. At this event, nearly $1,200 was raised for the Gamma Scholarship!
  • Sylvia and John Kafkas who so graciously shared their garage with us for the Annual Delta Zeta Dump. I believe Sylvia and John have been hosting our sale for over 30 years!
  • Megan Trout and all who helped, donated items, or shopped at our Annual Delta Zeta Dump. We had the great fortune of raising over $700 for the Gamma Scholarship!
  • Paula McQuillen for hosting a delightful Salad Supper at her home.

In the flame,

Barb Jones Brotherton

Supporting Education

If you would like to clip and save "Box Tops for Education", Campbell's Soup labels, or milk tops, any board member will collect them at an event. The board has decided to dedicate school philanthropy efforts to Crest View Elementary in Brooklyn Park (Holly Thompson's workplace). Our new Philanthropy Chair, Katie Whitehead is working with Holly to organize an event in Crest View's Library in the fall. Our focus will be collecting supplies.

Starkey Hearing Foundation Gala

Sunday, July 28th 2013 at 1-10:30pm

Saint Paul River Centre

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Holly Thompson at or 651-216-9345 or click on this link to fill out a quick form.

This year Starkey would like 20-25 people for the Gala evening only (Sunday, July 28) at the Rivercentre in St. Paul. We expect to arrive sometime around 1 p.m. and will finish around 10 p.m.

The event requires you to be on your feet for much of it, but it is very fun. The dress is formal. Our team is asked to staff the silent auction, participate in winner notification, and hearing angel. It is a star studded event and volunteers are treated well with a catered dinner and we are able to watch the show on monitors from the volunteer room.

There is also a volunteer training for first time volunteers and anyone who wants to attend on July 17. It's a nice night of appetizers, great information shared about the impact of the gala, along with details about your job on Gala evening. It is casual, but important if you have not done this before. This is held at the Starkey Labs in Eden Prairie.

If you have previously volunteered as a celebrity handler, driver, house party hostess, etc - Starkey no longer needs volunteers for these tasks so sign up to help. Also, there are no gift bags to prepare.
