This book was written during the Great Depression, and it criticizes american dreams. It's about how two Main characters in West survive the Great Depression. It also mentions prejudices. it wasn't just popular with the middle-class book club readers. Critics and scholars praised its realism, and Steinbeck won the 1962 Novel prize for literature.
The Great Depression.
In 1929, stock market suddenly crashed and the Great Depression began. A lot of people lost their jobs, and money. This changes the way of people's lives. Before the depression, people were rich, so they did not know how to survive the depression. Therefore, the whole situation went chaos.
