FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Mustang Families,
Every child needs a safe place to learn and interact with their peers, in healthy and supportive ways. Bullying is a repeated negative behavior that takes advantage of a less-powerful person, and sometimes even makes the child who is bullied feel at fault. Hitting, name calling, shunning and shaming are all forms of bullying. So are spreading rumors, gossiping and making threats online.
Recognize, Refuse, and Report Bullying
We want to work with families to help students recognize bullying, refuse to accept it happening to them or others, and to report it to adults so that we can help eliminate it from happening. We also know that bystanders play a significant role in stopping bullying or supporting bullying based on their actions, too.
How does bullying differ from other forms of conflict?
Other Conflict/Fighting
Between friends/equals/peers
Spontaneous/occasional
Accidental/not planned
No serious, lasting harm
Equal emotional reaction
Not for domination/control
Often a sense of remorse
May try to solve problem
Bullying
Not friends/imbalance of power
Repeated over time
Intentional
Physical/emotional harm
Unequal emotional reaction
Seeking control/possession
No remorse-blames target
No effort to solve problem
Thank you for bringing your students to us for their academic and social learning. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at hillestadc@monroe.wednet.edu or at 360-804-3500.

Teachers are in this profession to serve children and to change lives every day. They do this by believing in their students and by encouraging them to work hard and dream big. We have fantastic teachers at Maltby, who make a real difference in our community.
Thank you to ALL teachers everywhere!!!
We show appreciation to Staff next week too! Join the Maltby PTO in celebrating our ROCKSTAR Teachers & Staff!
We invite students & families to show extra gratitude to the Teachers & Staff throughout the week.
You can participate every day, choose which days, or celebrate in your own way.
Monday - Wear your teacher's favorite color or Maltby Gear.
Tuesday - Bring your teacher a classroom supply they are running low on or gift card for purchases.

State Testing is coming in May
State Testing is coming in May for Maltby 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders
Washington students take state and federal tests regularly to assess their learning growth as well as the progress of the educational system as a whole.
Great websites to learn more about SBAC and for students to take practice tests

Students have already begun practicing for the SBA in their classrooms. The SBA includes two English Language Arts assessments, two Math assessments, and one Science assessment (5th grade only). It is important that students are in attendance during the test dates. We will be testing May 16-May 24th with make-up testing going through June 2nd. More details will come at the beginning of May.

MSD Student & Family Spring Survey
We have partnered with Panorama, an educational research organization, to learn more about our students’ and families’ views of the climate and culture in our schools. We will be using Panorama’s survey tool to gain an understanding of the thoughts and feelings of students in grades 3-12 related to self-efficacy, self-management, social awareness, sense of belonging and support, and expectations for their learning. Students in grades 6-12 will also answer questions related to their experiences with cultural and racial diversity in our schools.
Families of our students will also receive a survey that will focus on roles and responsibilities related to school success, perceptions on school climate, student learning behaviors, barriers to student engagement, family efficacy to support student development, family engagement in the school, and school fit.
A list of example questions can be found here:
Please know that if your children attend multiple schools in the district, we would appreciate it if you could complete a family survey for each school.
