Discover U
October 2017
As we approach the end of our first quarter I am in awe of how our students, teachers, and families are demonstrating who we are as Explorers. Our students work hard to show respect, be proactive, practice kindness, and demonstrate courage while also demonstrating all of our learning behaviors in the classroom. To celebrate, we will be ending first quarter with an Exceptional Explorer Assembly on October 6th and a fun-filled Explorer Spirit Week October 9th-13th.
We are also looking forward to celebrating your child's growth at Parent Teacher Conferences October 11th-October 13th. Please be on the lookout for a sign up sheet and a note informing you of what time your conference will be at. This is a time to see your child's portfolio of work, discuss their current goals, and partner up with your child's teacher for a successful year.
Another celebration is the start of our Parent Teacher Organization. We had our first kick off meeting in September and we will be having a meeting October 9th to discuss school events and fundraising opportunities.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership to create a school where each child is nurtured, inspired, and empowered. I look forward to seeing you all during Parent Teacher Conferences next week.
Together in education,
Angela Makowski
Discover Explore Class Starts Coding
Our computer creation course, Discover Explore will be starting coding! We are excited for our Explorers to begin creating through code. Ms. Sanz will be teaching our Explorers about coding and they will begin this adventure by utilizing code.org.
Coding is writing commands or algorithm(s) to create a desired result for the computer to carry out. Coding makes websites, apps, computer games, and software possible.
6 Reasons Why Learning Code as a Child Matters:

- It inspires and unleashes creativity.
- It requires problem solving and critical thinking.
- It is a necessity for the future.
- It develops sequencing and fluidity in thinking.
- It is easier to learn as a child.
