A word from Mr Broom.

What an amazing week! I can't tell you how pleased I was with our Christmas Fair and i'd like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to everyone involved, right from the organisation, to selling raffle tickets and our amazing Santa's grotto to name a few! All week, people have been commenting on how it raised the spirit of Christmas. My Spotify Christmas playlist is certainly out!

Another highlight of my week was yesterday afternoon. I taught our wonderful reception children for the afternoon. We enjoyed some 'funky fingers' fine motor skills work followed by some wonderful singing and then some number work in maths. The children were a credit to our school and their parents!

Next week, it's our Christmas nativity programme (further information below). I've seen some of the rehearsals and you're in for a real treat.

Finally, the forecast of heavy snow for Sunday is one to watch out for. Please keep an eye on the website and your text messages for information. School will be open unless you hear otherwise.

Reception Places for September 2018

A quick reminder that there is still an opportunity to apply for a reception place for September 2018. If you've yet to submit your application form, then please do so.

Please note that even if your child is in our Nursery, you must still apply for a place.

Bad Weather School Closure Information

As we enter the cold spells of the winter period, we may at some point need to take the decision to close the school. Rest assured that we will do everything possible to keep school open so long as it is safe to do so.

If the decision is taken to close school, we will communicate this via:

- ParentPay Text Message (so please ensure your details are up-to-date).

- The School Website (

- Special Newsletter (via email)

- BBC Radio York (103.7, 104.3 & 95.5 FM)

- The BBC North Yorkshire Website (

If you hear nothing from us on these forms of communication, please consider school to be open as normal.

Warm Coats a Must!

Probably obvious one, but please ensure your child comes to school with a warm coat in these cold weather months.

Bring & Buy for Young Voices

As we close in on the Christmas period, I'd like to make you aware of the Bring & Buy sale that our Y5/6 will be holding in the new year. This is in aid of their trip to Sheffield Arena for the Young Voices concert 2018!

If you're having a clear out before or over the Christmas period, please consider this.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate, we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 6 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 100%.

As you can see below, our attendance in some classes is above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.

The overall attendance this week rose to 96.4% and is back above national averages. Many thanks for your continued support with this.

Christmas Dinner Information

Our school Christmas Dinner is on Monday 18th December. Children will be indulged with Turkey, sausages, stuffing, gravy and roast potatoes to name a few. Yum Yum!

On this day, there will be no other options available ie. sandwiches or jacket potatoes.

For our Key Stage 1 children, this is still a free meal but if you can advise the office (by Friday 15th) if you intend to bring a packed lunch, this would be most helpful.

Four our Key Stage 2 children, it's the normal price of £2.10. Please make your payment on Parentpay by 15th December.

Nativity Information

It's really important that you have a ticket for our Christmas Nativity performance, and this includes children and toddlers who come along. We need this for fire regulations. They promise to be very busy events and unfortunately, we wont be able to admit anyone without a ticket.

Also, could I please ask that if you bring little ones along and they become distressed, please will you make your way out of the performance. Several of our children may only have one line and I'd ask that you respect their opportunity to perform.

White Rose on the hunt for player (Y6)

Our neighbouring football club, Sherburn White Rose, are looking for new players to join their U11s teams. If your child is in Y6 or you know of anyone who is, let them know. Playing grassroots sport is a really good opportunity for children to make friends and develop social skills.

Sherburn-in-Elmet Lions Club

I met with the Elmet Lions Club on Wednesday to talk about how they could support our school and how our school could become involved in their community work. A couple of points of information:

- The usual Lions' Santa Sleigh will be touring the streets of Sherburn over the coming weeks, starting on Monday.

- The Lions are collecting used Spectacles (not cases) so if you have any in the bottom of a draw (irrespective of condition) please bring them into school before Wednesday 20th December. These will be sent to parts of the third world.

If Elmet Lions is something you would like to get involved in, please email Ann at
