Reading
Rittmueller Middle School - 6th Grade
Welcome to Reading!
Over the course of this school year, we will read, discuss, and share great books as a means to improve literacy skills and foster positive attitudes about reading. We hope to engender in each of you a lifelong love of literature!
What is reading class?
- It is an abbreviated (30 minute), end-of-the-day class.
- It provides you time to read - silently and for pleasure ... We teachers call this SSR - for sustained silent reading - and it's exceptionally important to your literacy development.
- It expects you to augment your classroom reading with home reading (At least 20 minutes of home reading, five days a week).
How will I be assessed?
Reading class incorporates the following assessments, and these assessments will be included as part of your broader Language Arts grade.
- Accelerated Reader Tests: Every three weeks, you will finish a book and take the corresponding Accelerated Reader test (AR test due dates = Sept. 18, Oct. 9, Oct. 30, Nov. 20, Dec. 11, Jan. 8, Jan. 29, Feb. 19, Mar. 12, Apr. 9, Apr. 30, and May 21). This means your marking period grade will include two AR tests.
- Participation Points: You will begin each marking period with 30 participation points. You will maintain all thirty of these points by coming on time and prepared to class and – during class – working to the best of your ability and respecting your teacher and your classmates.
- Miscellaneous Projects: As teacher assigns.
