Principal's Message:
Dear Weibel Families,
We started the month of March with Read Across America week and it was so great to see many students participate on various spirit days throughout the week. We also recently had our PTO Family Reading night with many of our teachers and a guest author, Barney Saltzberg. After our Family Night, Mr. Saltzberg also joined our students on Zoom for an assembly. Please see the PTO section below for a link to purchase one of his books. Thank you so much everyone for your support!
Please note that the 2nd trimester ended on March 4th and parents will have access to view report cards on Illuminate Parent Portal starting March 18th. We are excited to welcome volunteers back on campus. Please see the requirements to volunteer in your child's classroom below.
Thank you,
Ms. Lee

At its February 9 meeting, FUSD’s Board of Education voted to allow volunteers on campus under guidelines included in our COVID-19 District Safety Plan that go into effect March 1, 2022.
Volunteer opportunities are offered at the discretion of each school.
Starting March 1, volunteers will be able to enter FUSD facilities after meeting the following criteria:
Volunteers must have approval of principal/designee and teacher to enter a classroom.
Volunteers must provide valid photo identification.
Per FUSD Board of Education action on February 9, 2022:
Only one volunteer per classroom is allowed on campus at a time.
Volunteers must complete a health/symptom screener.
Volunteers must provide proof of vaccination:
Per Alameda County Public Health (ACPH), people are considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as Pfizer or Moderna, or 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as J & J. The vaccines must be authorized either by the Food and Drug Administration or World Health Organization.
Find more information about providing proof of vaccination status per ACPH: English | Spanish | Chinese
FUSD will re-evaluate this policy in April to determine if more/less restrictions may be needed.

QUARANTINE INDEPENDENT STUDY
Please contact our Weibel Office staff if you have questions.
We know that many of you have had to quarantine your student due to COVID symptoms. To ensure that we have continuity of instruction, and support students during this time, the district is offering short term and long term independent study options. Per Assembly Bill 130, students who are quarantined due to COVID symptoms and will be out of schools more than 3 days, will continue to receive educational opportunities through a short term independent study contract. When the school district requires a student to quarantine, a student/family will be given a packet of grade level work and a short term independent study contract to complete. When the student returns from the quarantine, the completed packet and independent study contract should be returned to the school site. In the case that a student has been quarantined for longer than 14 cumulative days, a student/family will be offered a long term independent study contract. Long term independent study will be conducted by a virtual teacher. The child will attend online classes daily for a check in and assignments will be given. Families will be given two links. One link for the Parent Agreement for the Long Term Independent Study and one link from the virtual teacher. The Parent Agreement is a form that must be filled out in order for your child to participate in long term independent study. We appreciate your compliance with completing both documents

Counselor's Corner:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy March!
I hope that the early Spring feeling is helping to get you and your children outdoors and into the sunlight! The simple act of being outside reduces stress in our bodies and minds. I know we can all use that!
Many students are reporting that they continue to spend several hours of their free time online. It is not a surprise after enduring distance learning and isolation from friends where digital devices were necessary. Unfortunately, the impact that we see in our students is that they are interacting with each other face-to-face in the same way they would while online. This includes unkind comments and assessments of peers and peer actions, "roasting" (making fun of) peers, inappropriate language, and more. This is much more rampant than in prior years. There has also been a reduction in eye contact and the ability to read and acknowledge others' feelings. Many are unaware or do not care about the impact they have on others.
This is such a great topic to discuss with your children. Talk about experiences they have had where someone joked about them or criticized them. Help them think about how they felt in that situation. What would they have liked to be different? Are there times that they also "roast" others or comment on their ability? How do they think the other person might feel? Encourage them to connect it to how most people would feel. Help them practice age appropriate ways to solve problems or deal with others' uncomfortable behavior. And help your child reduce their online time so that they can have more of the in-person interactions and learn other coping skills for when things aren't going well. They will need these skills when they enter middle school and life beyond this year. Need help? Feel free to reach out! Here are a few related articles: How to set limits on screen time, How to help kids do better with transitions, Media guidelines for kids of all ages, When should you get your child a phone, and Is internet addiction real?
If you were not able to attend the presentation on 2/24 about body safety and boundaries, you can watch it here. The pdf is here.
Check out the Healthy Minds, Thriving Kids series of free videos and print resources. It is designed to promote children’s emotional health and help them thrive. These videos empower caregivers and educators to teach kids essential coping skills, including: Understanding Feelings, Relaxation Skills, Understanding Thoughts, Managing Intense Emotions, and Mindfulness.
