Unit Description

This unit we learn about perimeter, area, surface area and volume. We used bumper car floor plans and storm shelter floor plans to find the perimeter and the area. Then we used nets to solve for the surface area of 3D shapes. Finally, we used an empty box and filled it with 2 centimeter cubes to find the volume of the rectangular prism.

What is perimeter?

Perimeter is the outside of a shape. Perimeter is measured in units.

WHAT IS AREA?

Area is the inside of a shape. Area is measured in square units.

Area of Square = Length x Width

Area of Triangle = Base x Height / 2

Area of Parallelogram = Base x Height

What is surface area?

Surface area is the total amount in area of a 3d shape. Surface area is measured in square units.

Surface Area of Pyramid = (L x W) + 4 (B x H / 2)

Surface Area of Rectangular Prism = 2(l x w) + 2 (l x w) + 2(l x w)

What is volume?

Volume is the mass inside the 3D shape. Volume is measured in cubic units.

Volume of Rectangular Prism = LxWxH
