Hello Families!
One of our goals at Pinkston Street Elementary is to strengthen the reading abilities of our scholars. This strengthening enables them to thrive across subject areas. You can support this goal by consistently supporting your child at home. With that said, we would like to introduce you to, “Literacy at Home,” an NC Digital Children’s Reading Initiative.
In order to provide continuing support for North Carolina’s youngest readers, The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Office of Early Learning has developed and released “Literacy at Home.” This digital resource provides literacy activities at each grade level, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Families and communities may access this resource for activities that specifically target the literacy skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and oral language. When children grow in each of these foundational areas they are well on their way to becoming proficient readers.
To access these resources, choose one of the following options.

Showing Up Matters for R.E.A.L.
Regular attendance is vital for student success. A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. Excused and unexcused absences result in too much time lost in the classroom. When students attend regularly, starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, they have an opportunity to achieve academically and thrive. Research shows that when students are chronically absent, (missing 10% or more of the school year or 18 days over an entire year), they are less likely to read proficiently by third grade, achieve in middle school and graduate from high school.
