Fryelands Falcon Flyer
March 24, 2022
From the Principal:
Dear Fryelands Families,
It’s time to register for kindergarten for 2022-2023
All Monroe elementary schools offer all day, every day kindergarten at no cost to families. Students attend from 8:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. State law requires incoming kindergarten students to have received current immunizations by the first day of class and be age 5 by August 31, 2022 to enroll for the 2022-2023 school year.
New families may register online for the current year. Learn how here.
Families with children currently enrolled can log into Family Access to enroll additional children.
If you cannot access the online registration packet, you can obtain the paper packet at any school office or at the District Administration Office, located at 14692 - 179th Avenue SE, Monroe.
Attendance Matters- School attendance is a priority at Fryelands Elementary
Research taken from Attendanceworks.org
Did You Know?
Research indicates that achievement is adversely impacted when a student misses 10 or more days of school a year.
10 to 17 missed days is considered an “At Risk” attendance rate.
Only 43% of children, who have an “At Risk” attendance rate in K/1st grade, will meet reading standards by the end of third grade.
18+ missed days is considered a “Chronically Absent” attendance rate.
Only 17% of children, who have a “Chronically Absent” attendance rate in K AND 1st grade, will meet reading standards by the end of third grade.
Children who are struggling to read by the end of 3rd grade are FOUR TIMES less likely to graduate from high school.
Missing 10% (or about 18 days) increases the chance that your student will not read or master math at the same level as their peers.
By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.
Have you thought about how much time your family spends together in a week?
Many studies show that spending quality time together as a family increases communication and the overall well-being of all family members. The following statements may give you ideas on how to increase family time or reaffirm what you are currently doing:
We eat dinner together most nights of the week.
I set limits on the number of activities my kids take part in each day.
We stick to bedtime routines and I spend at least five minutes talking with each child before they go to bed.
We designate certain times as “no TV times.”
We pick one night a week for Family Game Night or Family Activity Night.
I encourage you to have a conversation with your family about these ideas and see which ones you feel your family would benefit from trying out.
Thank you for bringing your students to school on time and prepared for learning each day. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at presleyj@monroe.wednet.edu or at 360-804-3400.
Sincerely,
Jeff Presley

Falcon Pictures from the Week
What do we need to learn from the failure of the recent levy measure?
In February of 2022, Monroe School District asked voters to renew the expiring School Program & Operations levy, which provides critical funding to "fill the gap" between state funding and the actual cost of the programs and services we provide to our students. Funding provided by this levy is critical in continuing many of the programs, activities and opportunities that directly benefit the students of Monroe. Unfortunately, the renewal of this levy was not approved by Monroe voters in February.
We want to know what we need to learn from the failure of the recent levy measure so that we can better meet the expectations of our community, address concerns, and effectively plan for ways to move forward together. Therefore, we are using Thought Exchange to give our community the opportunity to share their thoughts with us before we make plans to put this levy measure on the ballot again. Thought Exchange is an easy-to-use, interactive online platform that allows you to share your thoughts anonymously.
All community members are invited to share their thoughts and rate at least 20-30 of the thoughts that others have shared (5 stars = strongly agree, 1 star = strongly disagree). You do not need to rate all thoughts, though it's recommended to rate at least 20. Your participation is confidential, so no one will know who shared or rated which thoughts. Come back often until March 25 to rate new thoughts!
Is your student attending school on a transfer?
The deadline for families to turn in transfer requests is quickly approaching. Families living outside the Monroe School District requesting a Choice Transfer (out of district) or families living within the Monroe School District requesting an Intra-District Transfer (in district) for their child to attend a school outside of their neighborhood attendance area must complete forms to renew their transfers. This includes incoming kindergarten students. The deadline to turn in these forms to be considered for the 2022-2023 school year is Friday, April 1st. Forms received by this date will be reviewed and processed no later than April 22nd or sooner. Families will be notified shortly after. Late forms may not be considered until August.
As a reminder, all transfer forms must be renewed each year. A separate form is required for each child requesting a transfer. Forms are available online by going to https://www.monroe.wednet.edu/about/register-for-school/transfer-requests. Paper copies can be obtained at any of our school buildings or at the Monroe School District Administration Building located at 14692 179th Ave SE in Monroe. For specific questions regarding transfers, please call the District Office at (360) 804-2573. For general enrollment questions, please contact our office.
