GT with Mrs. G
Week of August 28
Greetings from Mrs. G!
Sorry for the double dose of Mrs. Gilbert's Newsletter for some...I realized this morning many of the parents of students I had in class weren't getting this so I manually re-entered all my email addresses! Many of you have not been receiving my e-mails at all, and I apologize. To clarify, you are receiving this email because either your child is currently identified as Primary Talent Pool/Gifted and Talented and/or your child is in one of my extension classes.
I did make a couple of edits to yesterday's newsletter, so enjoy this 2nd edition!
Mrs. G's Classroom Happenings at SSS this week:
1st Grade PTP- I missed seeing this group last week because I was out with a sick kiddo. I have some new games for us to play as we continue to get to know each other. We'll also continue our book, The Dinosaur Mystery (Boxcar Children).
2nd Grade PTP- We will continue reading Stuart Little and try some new math tricks.
3rd Grade PTP- We will finish our letters to our penpals. I have found a few classrooms of 3rd graders in different places (currently, my hometown of West Liberty in Eastern KY, a school in Arizona, and a school in Texas, but more are coming!) that would like to correspond with us. We are learning how to write friendly letters. This week we will finish those and prepare them to mail. We will begin studying about the places these students live and do some math with the information we uncover. We'll also continue reading Third Grade Angels.
4th-6th Grade Code Breakers: Last week, students took a quiz and wrote some nice analytical pieces about who they suspect as the thief and why. Check Mastery Connect to see performance on those assessments. This week, we will continue working on solving the mystery and begin planning our cumulative projects.
4th-6th Genius Hour I brought in the Chromebooks last week but we had internet difficulties. Students really need to work on their research at home to make up for this time. This week, students will find 3 sources on the internet, make a bibliography, and begin collecting information to help them answer their questions. Please encourage them to work on these projects at home. 90 minutes a week just isn't enough!
7th-8th Innovation Explorations- We are almost finished with our book Anthem. We've also begun our Shark Tank projects. Students are partnering up to do develop a product idea that would be marketable to their peers. They will conduct market research this week and begin developing their "pitch." They will also need to develop a business logo and consider pricing. They are really impressing me with their ideas!
7th-8th KYA Mock Legislature- Last week, we checked out some former KYA bills and evaluated them. We are gearing up for the KYA conference (November 5-7) and students need to be sure they've submitted financial aid forms or are making plans to pay the fees. All financial aid forms that students turned in to me have been submitted, but if you still need to submit one, you may do so online. For more information about our plans for KYA, click here!
SSS/FMS Academic Team Gearing Up for a Championship Year!
We held a meeting on Monday, August 28 to get an initial informational meeting out of the way. However, it is NOT TOO LATE to sign up! Use this link to indicate your child's interest.
We will have two test dates next week- Wednesday, Sept. 6 and Thursday, Sept. 7, both until 3:45 in Mrs. Gilbert's room. Please make arrangements for transportation as no ESS bus will be available.
