Harbor Seals

Why are they endangerd? What are people doing to save them?
- Due to fishing gear , harbor seals are also threatened by pollution and reprisal killings for damage done to fisheries.
- The Pacific Wildlife Foundation, WWF, and the NWF are major funds to help save the harbor seals and other marine animals.
- Help NWF to protect the harbor seals habitat.
Harbor seals have spotted coats and can vary in color from brownish black to tan or gray.
Harbor seals eat squid, crustaceans, molluscs, and a variety of fish; including, rockfish, herring, flounder, salmon, hake, and sand lance.
Unusual fact
Harbor seals don't chew their food. They swallow their food whole or tear it into chunks. With their back molars, they crush shells and crustaceans.
Food & Habitat
- Resting sites may be both rugged, rocky coasts, shorelines , or sandy beaches.
- Because harbor seal pups feed on important species, they often come into conflict with fishermen.
- Adult harbor seals are hunted by orcas, large sharks and polar bears.

Adaptations
- They move their back flippers from side to side to move themselves forward, and use their front flippers to help them move around.
- 1.5-1.8 m (five-six feet) in length
-115 kg (250 pounds) in weight
