Renew your SWE Membership Now!!
Did you know SWE's FY18 started July 1st? Your SWE membership is not only crucial to your career and/or education, but it’s important for advancing STEM diversity all over the world.
Here’s a look at what SWE accomplished during the 2016-2017 membership year:
- Launched the SWE Research site, where we share studies that provide insight into workplace experiences and culture, and aim to improve the rates at which women pursue engineering careers.
- Hosted our very first WE Local conferences in San Jose, CA and Pittsburgh, PA – 2017 marked the year where SWE brought learning, networking and growth opportunities of the annual conference to your backyard!
- Hosted over 1,000 attendees at conferences and roundtables in locations around the world, including countries like India, China, Malaysia and the Netherlands.
- Solidified our place as the largest scholarship program for female engineers by awarding over $750K in scholarships to members and non-members!
- Got over 5,000 participants involved in the SWENext K-12 Outreach program, including K-12 girls and K-12 STEM adult advocates.
In addition to continuing current programs, SWE will offer even more innovative and inspiring benefits in the coming membership year.
You can look forward to WE Local conferences in five locations around the US, monthly orientations for new members, a SWE Training Program for executives and the expansion of our STEM Re-entry Task Force program.
So just how can you renew your membership? Check out these step-by-step instructions to do so online.
Outreach Volunteers Needed! ---WOW! That's Engineering! Planning Committee ---
Since 2008, SWE Nebraska has grown our premier STEM outreach event and we are excited to plan for this fall!
WOW! That's Engineering!
Saturday, September 30th
at College of St. Mary, Omaha
Activities will include a keynote speaker presentation, hands-on activities, a robotics demonstration, visiting sponsor booths, and showing youth how much fun engineering can be!
Volunteers are needed to help with setup, check-in, monitoring participants, and clean-up. The event runs Saturday from approximately 8 AM to 4 PM, and volunteers are welcome to volunteer for any portion of that time for which they are available. Additionally, volunteers are needed to host activity sessions with time slots available in the morning and afternoon; what an awesome opportunity to add to your resume and performance review at work!!
Company's interested in hosting a demonstration / booth are welcome. People with contacts at schools are encouraged to share this info!
Please email Outreach Chair, Shannon DeVivo at outreach@swe-nebraska.org
if you would like to Volunteer.

SWE Outreach Metric Tool - Take Credit for your Impact!!
The SWE Outreach Tool is a simple 10 question survey to complete after any of your STEM outreach events.
Volunteer for work? Yes - that counts!
You are a regular computer teacher at the library? Log your time!
Volunteer to judge at your child's science fair? Absolutely counts!
Help out the local 4-H Robotics Team? Yes - this too!
Any events that focus on students ages 4-18 and/or their adult advocates such as parents, educators, and group leaders. The data you enter will be used internally by the SWE Outreach Committee to set goals and make strategic decisions. The data will also be used externally with sponsors to show the impact of the outreach that all SWE members do. Many grants require the information we are collecting, and we need accurate information to share with them. Here’s the information you should gather together before you use this tool:
– Event name and date(s)
– Section name: I002 Eastern Nebraska
– Event type
– Number of girls who participated in the event
– Number of boys who participated in the event
– Age of students who participated (Estimates are okay; report the age range of the majority)
– Number of Adults who participated – These are Parents, Educators, and other non-volunteers who participated in the event.
– Number of SWE Member volunteers
– Number of other volunteers – not SWE members
– Name of Partner Organization(s), if applicable
– Any best practices you would like to share (optional)

Introducing SWE's Constance & Nano Comic Challenge Winner!
Our very own President, Angel McMullen-Gunn is currently working with SWE on our second Constance and Nano—Engineering Adventure! It’s the Society of Women Engineers’ exciting comic book series that explores solving problems with science, technology, engineering, and math. Constance and Nano’s next adventure is going to be all about aerospace engineering—and one lucky SWENexter was chosen to be a character in the story! Angel is employed by UTC Aerospace and working with the comic book publisher on the next story that will be unveiled this fall.
Seventh Grader Angel Chukwudi-Denis, age 10, from Abuja, Nigeria is the winner of the United Technologies Constance & Nano Comic Challenge! She submitted the video below showing how she built a paper airplane that can carry cargo and glide more than ten feet. Congratulations Angel Chukwudi-Denis!

America Needs More Women Engineers
Women represent a small percentage of the total number of engineers in the workforce today. This is not to say that there has not been improvement. In fact, female engineers have more than doubled since 1980 – from 5% to roughly 14% of employed engineers in 2015.[i] Unfortunately, this is still vastly behind what many other STEM fields have seen with regard to gender equity improvements. For example, approximately 48% of biological and life scientists are women.

Women Engineers Read Rejection Letters from 1919
For the Society of Women Engineer’s Founders Day at the end of May, SWE published a series of letters from SWE’s archives from university deans and professors explaining why women could not be admitted into engineering schools in 1919.
Proposed FY18 Federal Budget Poses Major Cuts to Funding for Scientific Research and STEM Education.
While the proposed FY18 federal budget is likely to change as it is considered and amended by the United States House and Senate, the proposed cuts signal alarm for women in engineering and technology.

The Future of the Tech Workforce: Breaking Gender Barriers
ISACA conducted a study of women currently working in technology fields around the globe. Several issues emerged in the study as significant concerns.
In 2017, women in tech are still facing significant barriers in the workplace—from a shortage of women role models, to a gender-based pay gap, to persistent gender bias that nearly 90% of them say they have experienced. Through its Connecting Women Leaders in Technology program, ISACA (previously known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association) conducted a global survey of women in tech to uncover why women remain underrepresented in the field. The results show that much work remains to be done before we can build the stronger tech workforce of the future—a workforce in which women are equally represented, fairly compensated, and confident that their employers are committed to their success.
