SOLON INTERMEDIATE
MONTHLY UPDATE - DECEMBER 2019
PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break!
I cannot believe that it is already December. While December is often a relatively short month at school, it is also one of the best! This month always seems to be filled with such a great sense of joy, love and togetherness! Personally, I love decorating for the holidays and having the opportunity to spend time surrounded by those I love most. I hope this month brings you all hope, joy and happiness!
All of SIS continues to be busy teaching, learning and growing. We do our best to ensure that each day is filled with plenty of opportunities for rigorous learning and collaboration. Every minute with our students is focused on teaching, learning and building connections. It is important to us that we continue to provide quality instruction even during the days leading up to winter break (which will be here before we know it). We all know how precious and often limited time is in education, so each moment is spent focused on the opportunities to keep moving our students forward!
Thank you for your continued support! Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, concerns or feedback.

COLD WEATHER REMINDERS
As the colder weather approaches, we want to take a few minutes to remind all of our students about the expectations during recess. Please help us reinforce the following expectations by adding them to your daily school conversations at home:
- Students must have snowshoes and snow pants on to be able to play in the snow, otherwise they must stay on hard surfaces only
- No snowball fights, snow should not be flying towards anyone or anything
- Students should stay off any icy areas as they could slip and get hurt
- Labeling all hats, gloves, snow pants and boots will help reduce the number of lost items during the winter months
The cold weather can also bring changes to some of our student's normal dismissal routines. Please be sure to email your child's classroom teacher and the office (larwine@solon.k12.ia.us) by noon with any changes to their dismissal plan. This will help us ensure a smooth dismissal and that each student gets to where they are supposed to at the end of the day. It will also help ensure that your child has the necessary bus pass if they are going to ride on a different bus that day.
BASP LATE STARTS/CLOSURES REMINDER
- School closings due to inclement winter weather. The BASP program will be CLOSED on days when the SCSD closes or dismisses school early due to inclement weather.
- BASP closing due to inclement winter weather. The program will CLOSE on in-service or vacation days due to inclement weather. The program director will notify local television and radio stations.
- Unscheduled school delays (LATE STARTS) due to inclement weather. The program will be open 2 hours late as well as school. On 2 hour late starts the program will open at 8:15 AM and will remain open until school begins. Breakfast is not offered on late start mornings. If school is later canceled for the entire day due to the inclement weather, the program will remain open until 10:30 AM to allow parents time to pick up their children.
THANK YOU
Thank you for providing our conference dinners and helping our students access books through the recent PTO book fair. Your continued dedication and support for students and staff is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for all that you do to make SCSD and SIS the best place it can be!
