Principal's Report

Kia Ora e te Whānau. Haere mai ki te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

Welcome to Week 8 of the term and Māori language week. This week the student council have been encouraging our students and staff to include more everyday kupu Māori into our daily conversations.

I have enjoyed listening to them introduce the kupu of the day over the loud speaker every morning and give examples of how we can use it. Tino pai ngā kōrero tamariki mā!

This week I also had the privilege to visit Room 11 and 12 at their camps at Camp Columba in Pukerau. Congratulations to Mrs Willocks and Miss Roughan for well organised and well run camps, and a huge thank you to all the amazing camp parents who helped out. I can imagine there will be some very tired students and adults this weekend.

Camp provides an opportunity for students to experience new things and to push themselves out of their comfort zone. A number of the camp activities including abseiling, raft building and the high ropes provided great opportunities for this. I really enjoyed watching our students' faces after they had jumped off the high ropes, or abseiled down a cliff. What an achievement! All our students should be very proud of themselves!

Only 2 weeks until the next term break.

Ngā mihi nui,

Vicki Neave

Room 3

Cristian and James finished their Tukutuku. Thank you Mrs Hayes for all your work in Room 3. We had fun and learned lots.

Room 6

Room 6 students have been using Kleki to create the Balclutha Bridge pictures. Here are some pictures of the current Balclutha Bridge. We will create images of the first and second bridge over the next couple of weeks.

School Photographer

It has come to our attention that one of the photographers that took this year's school photos had a previous conviction involving questionable material, ten years ago, that made him unsuitable to work with children.

In line with school policy, the photographers were not alone with our students at any stage as all photos were supervised by staff.

The Board of Trustees has reviewed our policy and are confident that the policy was followed.

The photographer in question is no longer working for the company and has no access to our school images.

Moving forward we will ensure all school photographers have a successful police vet prior to coming onsite.

If you have any concerns around this matter, please contact the school.

Room 11

Room 11 students spent three wonderful days at Camp Columba, challenging themselves with a range of outdoor activities. The high ropes and flying fox tested their fear of heights and the raft building and team initiatives challenged their ability to work together as a team. A special thank you to the amazing parents who joined us and ensured that we all had the very best of experiences.

Last week, every student was given a spellathon card to take home. On one side of the card is a list of words (or letters) to learn and on the other side is a space for students to gather sponsors.

Students have different lists to learn, and they will be tested on half of the words/letters on their list next Friday 23 September.

All students will need to have their spellathon card at school on Friday 23 September, so that their test results can be attached and they can then show their sponsors how many words they got right!

Monies raised will be used to support purchasing Structured Literacy resources for the whole school.

We look forward to your support.

Room 1

Room 1 students have started their school kit this week. We have planted our little garden plants and have been learning about how plants germinate.
