A message from Superintendent Dr. James M. Gay

Making this first day memorable & meaningful

August 21, 2020

This week certainly has lived up to our commitment to make 2020-21 memorable and meaningful!

Throughout the week I've been thoroughly impressed with the enthusiasm and grit I've seen as we engaged in virtual Freshmen and Transfer Student Orientations, professional development to prepare a virtual first day of school, welcome packet pick-up and yard sign deliveries, and more.

I know that preparing for this first day of school comes with even more anxiety, jitters and excitement. This first day will be different whether it's your first or your 37th year in education.

  • Will we see students' smiling faces on this first day? Yes.
  • Will students and staff alike feel first day butterflies? Yes.
  • Could there be hiccups along the way? Yes.
  • Will we work through it together in order to do our very best? Yes.

As I've visited the schools throughout the past two weeks the energy I've seen is exciting. Colleagues working and learning together. Student leaders welcoming freshmen and transfer students. Staff members greeting students with yard signs at their homes. Virtual orientation sessions showcasing the amazing opportunities and supports that await students.

First days of school are always exciting. As we head into our remote day for all students on Monday, the format will look different, but this first day will hold that same excitement. I am confident that we are prepared to make this first day memorable and meaningful. And, I am grateful that our students and colleagues get to experience this first day with you!

Our new Digital Media Coordinator Rhys McIntyre has captured some of the experiences from the past couple of weeks. Rhys joined District 230 with more than a decade of experience in television production and storytelling. He's been posting videos to the district social media accounts (Facebook | Twitter) regularly including those highlighted below. If you have stories to share, please send him and Director of Communications Carla Erdey an email. Let's showcase all the reasons we are #D230proud!

Please take some time to relax this weekend. You've done the work. You've made the preparations. On Monday, we will be ready for this first day!
