HERMAN E. DUMMER NEWSLETTER
January, 2022
MRS. FORD'S MESSAGE
One tradition for the New Year is to create a New Year’s goal. We get excited because we become more focused and are willing to put forth extra effort to doing our best to achieve a goal we set for ourselves. I wish that this year, we could all just put forth the extra effort to be kind. Kindness helps us to overcome adversity by being able to be friends and welcoming acquaintances regardless of beliefs, looks, status, money…We always hear that it does not take much to be kind, but lately I am just not so sure. We cannot change others, but we can definitely look within our own selves and start right there. I for one am making that my New Year’s resolution and I hope more than anything, I can keep this one going for a long, long time and I hope others will share in my endeavor. Merry Christmas and Happy and KIND New Year!
e-Learning Days – in lieu of “snow days”
Winter weather in the Midwest can be somewhat of a hindrance when traveling to and from school. As in the past, using an “e-learning day” will be considered should there be inclement weather. Since Sandwich CUSD #430 is 1:1 and students and staff have their own device, please be prepared, on a daily basis, to shift to “e-learning” on so-called “snow days”. Please note, this will require everyone taking the responsibility of having their school issued personal device available for use at all times. Unlike previous years, e-learning days do not need to be made up at the end of the school year. e-learning days will be communicated via the district webpage and school messenger.

FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE
It is hard to believe that it is almost the new year. It feels like we just started! Our fourth graders have been working really hard this month.
In Math we worked on problem solving, reviewed long division, and learned about factors, multiples, and prime numbers. It was a busy month. We also had some fun with Math doing some Christmas activities. We are preparing to start work on fractions when we come back from break.
In Reading we completed our second unit. They really enjoyed learning about the different Native tribes that lived all over our country. After the break, we will be reading stories revolving around natural disasters. These are always a favorite! We will also be focusing on opinion writing in our next unit.
We have continued to study Illinois. They had a great time locating facts about the state while reading maps, fact sheets, and small stories about the state. They will be working on an Illinois project in January.
All classes have now started a new unit in Science. They are learning about soil formation and types, energy, and watching mealworms develop. They were even able to create some cool crystal formations in an extra holiday activity.
The fourth grade staff wishes all of our families a wonderful (and safe) holiday. We will see you all in the new year!!
FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
It is hard to believe that 2021 is almost over and 2022 is going to be here before we know it.
Fifth grade has been hard at work on learning how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. We will continue to talk about fractions when returning to school in January and begin multiplying and dividing fractions.
In reading, we will be finishing up our module about historical figures and writing informational pieces about a person we researched. We will be finishing our PBA writing assessment where the students will research and write about a person of their choosing. We will then be moving on to Unit 3 Module A: Understanding the Universe. We will begin by reading the novel George’s Secret Key to the Universe followed by the story “Mayday on Moon of Jupiter.” During writing, we will be talking about the science fiction genre and writing a science fiction piece of our own.
We hope you all have a great break and enjoy some much needed rest and family time!
BAND & MUSIC NEWS
Fourth and Fifth Grade have been working hard on playing two part holiday tone chime songs. Students have had to focus on their parts and use elements of teamwork to play a song together! We are wrapping up this last week by playing Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies and Carol of the Bells. Additionally, students have started working on their second remixes on BandLab to enter in the next remix contest that will happen at the end of February. Students will score each remix, which will be anonymous, and whoever has the most points wins!
The fifth grade band just had their winter concert on the 15th and all of the kids did a fantastic job. Our first concert will be on Tuesday, March 1st with more details to come. After winter break the entire band will be put together. Additionally, we will be using Essential Elements Interactive; a practice and recording app. This app is free to all students with a band book and is accessible on computers and mobile devices.
