Welcome to Room 605! I hope your third grader is enjoying school as much as I am. We have our routines down, and now we are ready for the real learning to begin.

Learning Update

English Language Arts

Reading:

We will learn to ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of both fictional and informational text. We will also learn to refer explicitly to a text when answering questions.

Writing:

We will write a paragraph stating our opinion. We will use linking words and phrases to support the reasons for the opinion.

Speaking and Listening:

We will engage in discussions with different partners. We will express our ideas clearly as well as follow agreed-upon rules for discussion including gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, and speaking one at a time.

Language:

We will use proper grammar when writing and speaking. We will gain a better understanding of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs and their functions in particular sentences. We will also demonstrate our knowledge of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. No excuse words will be practiced, learned, and used in everyday writing. Our third grade list went home on Monday. Testing will begin on Wednesday of this week.

Social Studies & Science

We will concentrate on science and social studies standards while we work and learn during our ELA time. We will read World Community Studies Weekly newspapers and do activities with the articles in the papers. These are weekly, children’s newspapers focusing on our social studies standards along with technology & science. Don’t be surprised if your child comes home talking about ancient histories, world cultures/continents, lives of famous & not-so-famous Americans, along with the regular talk of all kinds of maps and ecosystems for animals. We will try to get some hands-on science time to help us better understand science concepts.

Math

We will learn various ways to help us add and subtract two-, three-, and four-digit numbers. We will use place-value blocks, expanded form of numbers, and also the old-fashioned regrouping method (known as borrowing and carrying in my day). ;-) Next up is multiplication.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you would like to volunteer in the classroom or from home, please send me an email letting me know the day and times that work for you. Also, if you can volunteer at the school, please let me know if you prefer clerical work such as making copies, working with students, or either of the two. Thanks so much for your time!

THANK YOU!

I cannot thank you enough for the generous donations! Each and every item will be used and is greatly appreciated! Smooooooch!

Homework

We will have homework most nights of the week. There will be no Friday or weekend homework unless class time was not used wisely.
