Nick Lowe
TCHL 550
Introduction
Hi, my name is Nick Lowe and I am a high school social studies teacher at Greenwood High School in Bowling Green, KY. I have been very active in my school over the last 4 years and I absolutely love my job. Working primarily with freshmen, the day can be interesting I assure you. However, I have the opportunity to work with amazing students and they remind me everyday why I chose to be a teacher.
The OUTDOORS!!!
Ever since I was little I have always loved being outside. Whether canoeing, kayaking, or hiking it is nice to get away.
I'm Engaged
I have recently gotten engaged to a wonderful woman who is the best thing in my life!
Cross Country
Meet my team, we have grown to over 96 runners: Elementary, Middle School, and High School
Background
I am from Bowling Green and have lived here all of my life. I went to Greenwood (the school I teach at) and seeing this school from both sitting in the desks and being in front of the desks is weird but really fun at the same time. I graduated from Greenwood in 2004 and then went to WKU to receive my bachelor's degree in Social Studies and history. After graduation in 2008 I worked at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green for a semester before being hired at Greenwood as a full time Social Studies teacher for the 2009-2010 school year. I have taught at Greenwood ever since and have loved it!
Eduaction to Me
Since beginning my teaching career, I have had the opportunity to teach numerous classes including World History, Political Science, U.S. History, Reel History, AP Euro, ESL Social Studies, Geography, ESL Geography, and Pre-AP Geography (which is where I'm at now). I believe that students should have a structured plan for their learning and I feel that they can and should have a major influence on the learning process. The one who is doing the talking, is doing the thinking and I try to incorporate student discussion and student centered activities into my plans. I feel that we are preparing students for the real world and that they don't need to be taught what to think, but how to think. Students should be taught the skills to make them successful outside of high school.
Hobbies and What I Like to Do...
As you can tell from my pictures above, I love the outdoors and currently most of my spare time is taken up with coaching my cross country team....
Hobbies:
I really enjoy building and working on my house. I grew up working for contractors and any project that I can do on the inside and/or outside of the house is right up my alley. I just recently bought a house and I am going to redo the entire inside, which will keep me busy all summer.
Interest:
Spending time with my fiance, our dog, and relaxing with friends and family is what I love to do when I have the time. Grilling, movies, and sports are a big part of my life and what I will be spending a lot of my spare time this summer doing! I have an extensive movie collection, and NO I do not have a favorite...because I can't decide. I enjoy listening to music; country, classic rock, bluegrass are at the top of the list but I can listen to anything as long as I can understand what they are saying (AKA no head banger music).
Running and my team:
I have been the coach of Greenwood Cross Country for the past three years now and that season is honestly my favorite time of the year. They keep me busy and at times it is stressful and hectic but they are such a wonderful group of athletes and parents to be around. i am truly blessed to have the opportunity to be their coach and I wait for that season start every May... and we start soon! I ran for Greenwood Cross Country in high school and it is awesome to be able to come back and coach the same team I competed for.

My Travels...Germany!
This is the exchanged that I helped start with Warren Central and carried it over to Greenwood. We are partnered with a school in Werne, Germany the Anne Frank Gymnasium. They come visit us for two weeks in the Fall and then we travel to Germany to visit with them in the Summer. It is a great exchange and a great way for our students to experience different cultures.
