Fun In Grade One!
First Grade News For the Month of December
Reader's at Work!
As we work to build the foundation for literacy while simultaneously instilling a love for reading with first grade students, we thought we'd take this opportunity to highlight some of the students' favorite books from class! During the second marking period we are working hard on identifying and analyzing story elements. Here are some of the books the kids have LOVED reading in class that are worth a second read at home! A librarian at your local library would be able to find these titles for you to reread together!
Room on The Broom by Julia Donaldson. The students loved reading along with some of the repeating phrases in this book. This story includes a lot of rich vocabulary and has a beautiful rhyming rhythm!
First grade is a great time to expose children to beginning chapter books. There are many series geared toward beginning readers. If your child likes The Magic Tree House or Junie B. Jones books, you should check out Desmond Cole: Ghost Patrol by Andres Miedoso. We've just finished the first book and students can't wait to see what the next spooky mystery will be!
After the Fall: How Humpty Got Back Up Again by Dan Santat has a great message. This story allowed students to truly contemplate the nursery rhyme they knew so well from kindergarten and inspired some amazing predictions and discussions. You can check out a read aloud of this awesome twist on a familiar tale here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUKt1a6I3yw
We love having the opportunity to share your child's enthusiasm for reading. They are truly beginning to view themselves as readers! If you are interested in more ways to support your child as a reader in addition to their normal homework routine, please reach out via class dojo! Also, if you need any new or interesting bedtime reading materials for your child, we are happy to share some great books. Thanks for all that you do to support your child's READING at home!
Sincerely,
Ms. Ladd, Mrs. Campbell, Ms. Pitera, Ms. Parham, Ms. Porter, and Mrs. El-Dada
