They started in during the early 1700s in an effort by manufacturers to reduce labor costs. Britain experimented with mechanizing some production processes, mostly for mining and textile production, but the lack of flexible power sources and regional land transportation discontinued substantial progress.

Spread of Industrialization
Industrialization spread to Russia. Russia boomed in the railroad industry and became the 4th largest producer of coal and iron. They linked them selves to the rest of Asia and Europe as well as making a Trans-Siberian railroad that spanned 9,000 km. Both governments promoted industrialization. Russia's government while in Japan they promoted schools, science and technology engineering, and many new mines for iron and coal as well as factories.
