Meet the Counselor!
Greetings! I am the school counselor at Eagles Elementary school and I am so excited to work with your students this year! This is my 7th year at Eagles and my 10th year as a school counselor. Prior to my work as a school counselor, I was a Licensed Professional Counselor in the community. I am passionate about helping kids with their social/emotional and also mental health needs. At home I am a mom of 3 small humans and 3 small(ish) fur babies. It is a busy and full life!
At Eagles, I work with ALL students. I will be in your students' classroom 2 times each month teaching lessons on skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, and problem solving.
In the Fargo Public Schools, we use a counseling curriculum called Second Step.
When I am not teaching lessons, I spend most of my time meeting with students individually and in small groups. I am happy to meet with any child. School Counseling is brief and solution focused and topics may include: Changing families, Friendship, conflict management, anxiety, anger, grief, self-regulation, self-esteem, and so much more. If you have concerns about your student's mental health or social/emotional well being, or if there have been recent changes in your family that you are concerned about, please feel free to reach out. I will meet with your student and we can discuss how we should move forward. Sometimes students need further services in our community and I am able to support and assist in finding resources and referrals as well.
I know that students learn best when they are well rested and have full bellies. School counselors are great at helping families with resources in the community for food, clothing, and medical care. Please do not hesitate to reach out if your family is facing challenging times. We also have "the backpack" program at school, which provides food for students over the weekends. There will be a form coming home soon, if you think this may be helpful for your family.
Lastly, I will be holding monthly zoom sessions on parenting topics. Please let me know via this survey what you may be interested in learning more about.
I am available by phone or email and you can expect a response from me within 1 working day. I hope to hear from you this year!
Minute Meetings!
Over the next few weeks, I will be around the school meeting every student for 1 minute. The purpose of these meetings is to get to know all of our students and to build a connection. I have 6 scripted questions that I ask each student to get to know them better and they include: How do you feel about school this year? What do you like to learn about? What would you like to do when you grow up? Who is a friend at school? How are you feeling about yourself? and Is there an adult who cares about you at school?
These questions are aligned with the 4 counseling domains of the American School Counseling Association: Academics, Career, Social, and Emotional. It is also very important to us at Eagles that your student feels safe and has an adult they can talk to in the building, should they have concerns.
I look forward to these visits and talking with your student!
