What's Happening at SHS/S9
2014 Back to School Edition
Traffic Update from PTO!
First, I hope everyone had a terrific day. Reports are that classes are going well and students are loving the break time after first period(more on that in another post). Now to the big issue: Today I was able to be on the SHS campus for the dismissal of school and made the following observations:
--The buses left S9 at 3:30 PM and then left SHS by 3:45 PM.
--The first student got into a vehicle in the SHS car-rider line at 3:34 PM and it took 20 mins for the last vehicles in line to pull forward to pick up students. There were students still waiting, but no cars in line.
--Student drivers began leaving the SHS parking lot as soon as buses exited and all students in line to leave were off campus before 4 PM.
--At 3:45 PM there was virtually no traffic on Ford Chapel Road and only a few cars on Jeff Road were held up while students exited. The crossing guard alternated between traffic on Jeff Road and student traffic.
--There were a few students waiting for a late bus, but they know why that particular bus will run later than the others.
How the car-rider line works at SHS:
For the SHS car rider line, cars turn onto Senator Drive, follow the road to a certain turn around point where the line will begin to wrap around. At the area just in front of the Football Stadium ticket booth, space should to be left for the Special Needs buses to turn into the covered area at the back of the school. Please be helpful in letting those buses through the line.
Observations at SHS:
I watched the student pick up process and these steps will make things move faster and more efficiently:
--Please pull close to the car in front of you so that more cars can get into the line and off of Ford Chapel Road.
--Students are NOT allowed to walk to Senator Drive to get into cars, but they are allowed to walk down the sidewalk along the car-rider line to wait.
--Please pull all the way forward around the loop to where the sidewalk ends. This will allow many more cars in the loop to pick up students at one time.
--Once you have picked up your student, you may pull around the loop to exit. You do not have to wait in the line for the cars in front of you to load.
--Many students stood and talked to friends or waited behind the crowd until their car was right in front of them. This slows the process considerably. If you want the line to move faster, then tell your child to be watching and don't stand talking until you get right in front of them. Ask them to come to your car, if they can see it in line.
--Please watch cars that have picked up students and are pulling around waiting cars. A fender bender will definitely slow down the process!
--The car-rider line at S9 began to move more quickly once the buses left for SHS. There was no traffic on the S9 campus at 3:45. If you have the option, you may want to plan to arrive at S9 about 3:45 PM to pick up students so that you don't have to sit in traffic on Jeff Road or Ford Chapel Road.
--Please understand that this process will be much slower on rainy days as students will want to stay under the awning.
Lessons learned over the past two days resulted in a much faster turn around time today. S9/SHS administrators have been working to make adjustments to help the process run more smoothly and we appreciate their efforts. Our admins and teachers did an awesome job of directing traffic and students today YOU ROCK!
I hope my observations are helpful to you and as always we are interested in your feedback and really appreciate your patience during this transitional period.

Parents, please someone will be at the car rider line to direct traffic. Please watch them for directions.
SHS Traffic Plan for 2014-15!
This plan may cause some confusion as it differs significantly from the traffic plans of previous years. Please be aware that tweaking of the plan may occur over the next couple of weeks and we will be sure to let you know of any changes. S9 traffic plan will remain the same as in the past. Please consider the slow traffic flow of the first several days and allow enough time in the mornings to arrive at school on time. Student drivers please be patient and vigilant as we all figure out the new traffic plan :)
The BIG changes at SHS:
--Most buses will load and unload in the front of Sparkman HS for grades 10-12. Special needs buses will continue to load/unload at the back of SHS.
--Parents will drop off/pick up students at the back of Sparkman HS in the loop that was previously the bus load/unload area.
--Parents who are dropping off students will enter and exit at Ford Chapel Road ONLY.
--Parent drop off begins at 8 AM. School will not be open before 8 AM.
--Traffic on Senator Drive will be 2-way traffic until the Car Rider Line entrance, then students only will continue into the school parking areas.
--Traffic entering Senator Drive from Ford Chapel Road will turn into the right hand lane(as you are looking at SHS from Ford Chapel Road). The crossing guard will direct traffic onto Senator Drive appropriately.
--Traffic exiting Senator Drive onto Ford Chapel Road will use the left hand lane(as you are looking at SHS from Ford Chapel Road). The crossing guard will direct traffic appropriately.
--Students entering the Ford Chapel entrance should use the first entrance into the student parking lot (across from the ticket booth) or proceed to the football/athletes parking lots.
--Students, teachers and buses ONLY are allowed to enter the Jeff Road entrance at SHS. Students will enter the South entrances into the student parking lot.
--Students may use both the Ford Chapel exit and the Jeff Road exit to leave school in the afternoons.
**Please see the maps for a visual of the traffic plan
